When was the first time you knew somebody who died?

You know, somebody your own age. I had a friend commit suicide about 5 years ago, he was a classmate in middle school/high school.

Re: When was the first time you knew somebody who died?

I believe it was a couple of months after graduating high school. There was a person down the road that committed suicide when I was younger but he was probably 6/7 years older then me.

My roommate junior year at ISU committed suicide. First time I had dealt with any sort of death.

When I was a Freshman in High School a kid was hunting and shot himself climbing over a fence. Didn't put the safety on.

This thread makes me wonder if my class from HS is still unscathed.

Re: When was the first time you knew somebody who died?

Great Grandmother died when I was elementary school. Best friend's mother died when I was jr. high. Had several classmates pass during our senior year in high school. It wasn't until college when I had several people very close to me pass.
One of my best friends died from a kidney transplant the summer I was supposed to graduate from ISU. It wasn't the surgery that killed him, it was the cancer he got from the transplant that got him. They test for that stuff now.

My father in-law died 2 days before Christmas, and the wife had to fly out to N. Carolina that Saturday for the funeral, which was on a Monday (Dec. 29th). One week later - January 5th - our second daughter was born. Somewhat bittersweet.

Lost a friend a few years ago to spinal meningitis. Very weird thing. Wife was still pregnant with his first kid too.

Re: When was the first time you knew somebody who died?

Hmmm, well Ive had 3 of my 6(Im adopted, its complicated, dont ask) grandparents die while I was between the ages of 7 and 18. My best friends dad passed away while we were in kindegarten(sp?), one of my classmates freshmen year of high school died of cancer, and one of my friends committed suicide 2 years ago. Lots of death in my short life so far.

Re: When was the first time you knew somebody who died?

In 5th grade a few of my friends in our Cub Scout den were out on the farm of the den leaders. I was suppose to go over there, but couldn't for some reason. Anyway, they were playing in a old wooden shed and trying make molotov cocktails with gas in old canning jars, one of the guys through a glass and it sparked somehow. It blew up and the den leaders daughter who was a year younger than us was burned to death.

Ruined many families. The den leader family divorced and left town and the kid who threw it, his family moved out of town. Never heard from any of them again.

Re: When was the first time you knew somebody who died?

We had a couple of kids die in high school but no one I was close to. It's been so long I can't remember their names. When I was a freshman at ISU a guy I knew commited suicide.

The strangest for me was when I was in high school and we were very close with a dairy farmer. His father who was about 85 at the time was over at our house that afternoon. As he was leaving he called me over and started telling me how to trim the apple tree in our yard to get the most apples out of it. He told me he had to tell me now because he wouldn't have a chance later. That night his son called us and asked if he was over at our house and we told him we hadn't seen him since the afteroon. He was found dead in the pasture a day or 2 later. I'm positive I was the last person he spoke to and he knew it was time for him to die.

Re: When was the first time you knew somebody who died?

First month of high school freshmen year a cross country teammate died in a car accident.

Last month of senior year a track teammate passed away with a heart ailment after running the 200. Hardest thing I ever had to do was call other teammates to tell them the bad news.
