    Honda builds a chopper?

2010 Honda Fury First Ride - Motorcycle USA

I'm a big Honda motorcycle fan and owner but I think this is one of the worst ideas ever by Honda.

#1 I'm sure that this Honda will be more reliable, cheaper, and ride better than 99% of the choppers that are made but here is the important thing that they didn't consider. IMAGE

Choppers are all about image. I can't think of one reason why someone would build/own a chopper besides image. They are not comfortable and most of them handle like crap. If you want something sporty you buy a sportbike/standard. If you want a comfortable interstate cruiser than you buy a gold wing. If you want something that looks kind of cool and is decent on trips than you buy a cruiser. If you want to look like a bad-azz and not concerned about anything else than you buy a chopper.

With that out of the way how many chopper buyers are going to want a Honda?

I think they'll be lucky to sell 1,000 of these things.

It seems everything Honda does is gold. I would expect this to be as well. They take chances and have a good eye for product niches.

That does seem to be true.

One exception I can think of are naked bikes in the U.S. I have a 919 and they just didn't take off here in the states even though they are very popular in Europe. When they first introduced them here in America I thought they will be very popular. I guess that show you how much I know :)

Another reason I think they'll fail on this one is how late they are to the market. The chopper thing seemed to be really popular a few years ago and now seems to have died.

You're probably right though. They'll find a way.

You make an excellent point, dmclone, but you're overlooking one key demographic- Posers. I think there will be a lot fewer Harley's being trailered into Sturgis in the coming years.

That's probably what Honda is counting on. It sounds like it's pretty hard to find a Honda badge anywhere. It's similar to what Hyundai is doing with the Genesis. The person buying it knows the quality that you are buying but they want everyone else to think it's something else. Although it's going to be hard to hide a shaft drive chopper.

Most "biker-chix" wouldn't know the difference either.

    "It's a Honda-Davidson, Baby."

Like shooting fish in a barrell.

    "The bass, the rock,
    The mic, the treble,
    I like my coffee black,
    Just like my metal."
