    The Watchmen

So who plans on seeing The Watchmen this coming weekend?

I can remember reading bits of the book in Mayhem Collectables in 1990 muttering 'what the hell is this?!?'

Not sure how it is going to translate to screen..but I have the feeling the general public will either love it or hate it with very few falling between.

    Re: The Watchmen

I am looking forward to this seeing it. I understand that they have taken a fair amount out and changed the ending somewhat. Some of the omissions are by necessity.

    Should be a decent movie.

    Re: The Watchmen

I am pretty excited to see it. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

If any of you can't wait until this weekend, an animated comic version is coming out on Blu Ray and DVD this week, using the original graphic novel illustrations.

    Re: The Watchmen

What the hell is this movie about, anyway? Are the Watchmen like the darker, more sinister version of the Justice League? Pardon my ignorance, but I've never heard of the Watchmen before I saw the preview.

It's a graphic novel by Alan Moore (the guy who wrote V for Vendetta).

The catch line from the book sums it up. "Who watches the Watchmen?"

Story is about masked heroes and the struggles they deal with protecting a society that hates them. Since Moore wrote it there is a lot of evil government overtones in it and all that jazz.

Should be a very good flick. Looking forward to going to an IMAX in Des Moines to see it

    Re: The Watchmen

Tough to describe, I'm just about done with the comic now - unlike anything else I've ever read and I used to read comics about 15 years ago when I was a kid. I'd wiki it or something.

    Very excited about the movie.

The story also contains overtones about masked heroes who used to be relevant many years ago but as they have gotten older and the world has gotten darker, they find themselves obsoleted and even accosted by the society they are trying to protect. The original story has many layers of complexity and metaphor.

Yea I rewrote my post quite a few times. As Bryce said, tough to explain

Is this the sort of movie that I should read the book before seeing it?

Nah, I think you'll be able to get plenty of enjoyment out of just watching the movie.

There is plenty of backstory so I don't think you'll ever feel lost about who this character is.

Well, this is assuming the movie is done well, I hope it will be.

Moore had always been dead set against turning the novel into a film, but David Hayter (the guy who did this screenwriting) was given Moore's blessing.

I looked up some stuff on it when I first saw the trailer in the theatre... basically it is a movie based off of what is considered by most critics/graphic novel/comic book fans to be the best graphic novel ever written. A darker look at superheroes in a twisted future where Richard Nixon is still President and the world is heading towards an Apocalypse.

    I am pumped for it.
