    HDTV Suggestions

I'm looking at purchasing a 50" TV and have no clue where to start. It would be used mostly for watching sports/movies and maybe occasionally playing a video game, any thoughts/help?

I'd like to jump in on this as well, except a 32" for movies and sports.

I just saw a 32" Samsung in the Sunday Best Buy add for $500. Sounds like a great deal.

    Re: HDTV Suggestions

You'd better get to American soon. They had some killer deals on tv's, I'm not sure if they still do or not?

If you're going to watch sports on it, and you don't have a lot of windows in the room, go with plasma. I know LCD is the new thing, but with a fast moving picture it's really blurry.

Oh wait, you'll be watching Iowa? You'll be fine with an LCD then.

    Re: HDTV Suggestions

I did a lot of research when buying my TV and here is what I can tell you.

    Make sure it's 1080p
Make sure it has at least 2 HDMI connections
If you're trying to decide between two different sizes, always get the bigger.

    Plasma
IMO has the best picture unless you're in an environment where it's really bright. Down side is that most are energy hogs. There are less and less makers of Plasma but Panasonic is probably the most popular. I just recently got a 46" Panasonic from American TV for $1,000 and couldn't be happier.

    LCD
If you go the LCD route make sure you get 120mhz.

BTW-I was set on getting an LCD before I did research. I also have a 1080p LCD projector that I couldn't be happier with.

    Re: HDTV Suggestions

If I was in the market for a 50" I'd buy a Panasonic TH-50PZ85U. 2008 model that you can get for around $1,500 I bet. I'm getting the 46" as soon as I hit the right price from the right vendor. Do some research on that model and you'll find overwhelming satisfaction. This is a plasma which I prefer to LCD for anything with motion. Even 120 Hz LCD blows in my book.

I thought I'd seen most 50" TV's for around $1100 or less, are those lesser models?

yes they are lesser models. If you want a 50" 1080 plasma you will be spending atleast 1299

you can get a 50" panasonic 720p plasma under 1k though

Amazon has some great deals! Free shipping and no tax. You can buy extended warranties from there also, very good prices on those too. I got a 42 Samsung plasma for $585(open box), right around Super Bowl time. Its a great TV! I also noticed Sears has been running some good adds for their online stores, better prices than Best Buy even.

    Re: HDTV Suggestions

I want to add that I have the panasonic 42" 720p TV and I think it looks great. The hole 720p vs 1080p things gets overblown imho. If you are upgrading from a 27" tube like I was no matter what you get it will look great and be a giant improvement.

Second that on Amazon. There's where I got my tv and have recommended to others in my family who have purchased and liked their experience with them as well.
