    ISU MBB - Historical Perspective

Recently, there have been a lot of posters "supporting" our current head coach by trying to point out that "ISU has never been able to win on the road in conference" or that "ISU really doesn't have that great of a basketball tradition anyway".

To these comments I provide the following data on the "modern era" of ISU MBB (Johnny Orr to present). All of the following data pertains to conference records only:

    Johnny Orr (14 seasons)
+ 11 winning records at home
+ 2 undefeated seasons at home
    + home winning percentage .643
    + road winning percentage .163
+ 3 seasons with zero road wins
+ finished top quartile of conf 2 times
+ finished second quartile of conf 3 times
+ finished third quartile of conf 8 times
+ finished fourth quartile of conf 1 time

    Tim Floyd (4 seasons)
+ 4 winning records at home
+ 0 undefeated seasons at home
    + home winning percentage .667
    + road winning percentage .333
+ 1 season with zero road wins
+ finished top quartile of conf 2 times
+ finished second quartile of conf 0 times
+ finished third quartile of conf 1 time
+ finished fourth quartile of conf 1 time

    Larry Eustachy (5 seasons)
+ 4 winning records at home
+ 2 undefeated seasons at home
    + home winning percentage .750
    + road winning percentage .300
+ 2 seasons with zero road wins
+ finished top quartile of conf 2 times
+ finished second quartile of conf 0 times
+ finished third quartile of conf 2 times
+ finished fourth quartile of conf 1 time

    Wayne Morgan (3 seasons)
+ 2 winning records at home
+ 0 undefeated seasons at home
    + home winning percentage .667
    + road winning percentage .250
+ 1 season with zero road wins
+ finished top quartile of conf 0 times
+ finished second quartile of conf 1 time
+ finished third quartile of conf 2 times
+ finished fourth quartile of conf 0 times

    Greg McDermott (nearly 3 seasons)
+ 0 winning records at home
+ 0 undefeated seasons at home
    + home winning percentage .478
    + road winning percentage .087
+ likely 2 seasons with zero road wins
+ finished top quartile of conf 0 times
+ finished second quartile of conf 0 times
+ finished third quartile of conf 1 time
+ finished fourth quartile of conf likely 2 times

Take it for what it is worth. In the 26 years prior to McDermott, ISU finished in the fourth quartile of the conference only 3 times (once each under Orr, Floyd, and Eustachy). At the end of this year it is highly likely that ISU will have finished in the fourth quartile of the conference 2 times in 3 seasons under McDermott.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: ISU MBB - Historical Perspective

I'm not sure what you are trying to show statistically. What I see is that we have averaged winning one quarter to one third of road games (which isn't very good) and two thirds to three quarters home games (pretty good). Throw in 2 more home/away wins per season and mcdermott is right up there with the others...

It also shows that all these great coaches finished in the bottom half more than in the top half.

I guess I define "bashing" as coming out and saying "McDermott sucks" or something similar. All I have done is give you the facts in the original post.

Oh yeah, that's right, using the facts with McDermott is considered "bashing". Sorry, my bad.

The old "if and but" argument. Why don't we throw in a couple more wins for each coach for each season if you want to do that for McDermott??

With the exception of Floyd, you are correct. Floyd was top half 2 times and bottom half 2 times. One thing you fail to point out is McDermott has never been in the top half.

Additionally, I broke it into quartiles because there is a big difference between the 3rd quartile and the 4th quartile in a conference like the Big 8 / Big 12 (even though both are "bottom half"). You finish at the top of the 3rd quartile in the Big 8 / Big 12 and you are likely an NCAA bubble team / NIT team in most years. You finish in the 4th quartile and you are staying home (no post season).

I guess I don't understand wtf you are talking about. I was merely stating that McDermott only needs to improve by winning 2 home games and 1-2 away games to "statistically" match up with the others. (even though it's kind of meaningless)

Oh, I'm sorry, you knew what I was saying better than I did. I guess I should just let you make all my posts for me.

I'm still trying to figure out why you were such a Chizik supporter. That seems incompatible with your McDermott feelings.

Re: ISU MBB - Historical Perspective

Didn't Eustachy have a very long road losing streak? Not just conference, but all road games, including non-conference? In fact, I'm pretty sure it went into Morgan's tenure (maybe even a season), until the win at Texas.

Edit: I guess there may have been a UNI/Drake/Iowa win somewhere in there for Morgan, but no wins outside the state of Iowa until the Texas game.

How many of those coaches lost the best player on the team 3 years in a row?

I can think of two years in a row when Fizer left and then Tinsley to graduation.
