It's kinda hard to keep talent that's already declared for the NBA BEFORE you were even hired.

    No kidding.

He also should have worked harder to keep Hornacek, Hoiberg, and Tinsley.

So is it still not Mc D's fault that he left? I still back coach, but I disagree with people when they say WJ left and there was nothing coach could do about it

It is good to see he has identified some of his weaknesses relative to past recruiting and player relations/retention at ISU. I hope he is able to correct these issues.

I think where some of us disagree (I for one certainly do) is with the assessment that the program needed to be "blown up". I'm sorry, but I just do not believe that to be the case. In fact, had McDermott done a better job of keeping the talent he took over on the team when he came aboard as opposed to just letting it walk, I think his first couple of seasons would have been hugely successful. That is often the case when a coaching change is made where you replace a top recruiter who can get talent with a better X&O guy that can game plan and coach on the floor (I have used when Davis took over from Raveling at Iowa as a great example but there are others).

Finally, if anyone needs to "lighten up" a bit...it is you.
I agree with you in the fact that the program didn't necessarily need to be "blown up to rebuild it from scratch" BUT you could argue that really McD didn't have a whole lot to do with the unraveling of it with the departures that he's had the past couple years. He had a legitimate reason to get rid of Mike T but I'm sure if McD knew that Wesley was on the bubble of leaving, I would guess he would've made every effort possible to keep him on the team.

It may be his fault but I truely doubt he purposely ****** off WJ to make him want to leave the program. Do you believe he did? If I had to make a guess, McD would go back and do everything he could possibly do to keep WJ happy if he knew he was upset.

Didn't even sound like the players knew. His brother snuck in during the night and whisked the panzy away.

Agree...unless it was an "inmate trying to run the asylum" situation then I say good riddance.

Right. Sometimes you can do everything right, and it just doesn't work out. I think that's how the Wesley thing went down.

    Re: McDermott on SoundOff tonight...

The WJ leaving seed was planted in Vegas which did not involve Mac at all...Mac's fault was challenging WJ toughness before the away Nebraska game...WJ broke and did not respond the way Mac was looking for him to.

I always figured that Wes found it easier to leave because he thought McDermott was too tough on him. Not that he left because of that, but that was a ready made excuse. I also figured that the brother put a lot of that in his head. For example, Wes probably complained (as anyone would) that he was mad at the coach, coach was unfair, etc, etc) and then the brother used that to help him to decide to do whatever was suggested in Vegas.

If McDermott said that he would have done things differently last year, he must assume there was something he thought he could have done about it.

I respect McD for admitting the things he did during the interview. Like 99.9% of Cyclone fans I really want him to succeed. Great guy.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there were quite a few other guys that bailed that had not "declared for the NBA BEFORE" he was hired. I have seen some of them play on TV this year.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
