    Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

Not long after Pollard arrived in Ames - reports were he wanted to change the ownership and/or maintenance agreement with Hilton Coliseum. I can't recall the specifics of the current and what he was proposing.

Wondering if someone can give a refresher and if it's know - what the status of that "project" is.

    (leaving for class)
But.... I thought the city somehow technically controlled Hilton, but I could be wrong. I heard what your speaking of and also wonder what came of it.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

Right, as I recall it the city or another firm owned it. They also owned the maintenance of it and ISU did not profit much - if at all - from its events.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

Currently, I believe the Iowa State Center (which is a non-profit entity) has ownership & manages Hilton along with the Scheman building and the theatres. It's my understanding that the Athletic department pays rent to the Iowa State Center. I'm thinking that Pollard wants the ISU Athletic Department to take over ownership responsibility as part of the renovation project.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

I think this has been discussed before but can the ownership change to where beer would be allowed? That would be a give a big boost to attendance. I think in Omaha, the qwest center is somehow connected to the city and the beer flows heavily. Not sure of the rules for Hilton and Ames.

Edit: just saw the above post by isualum2003. Obviously if the plan is for ISU to take over, no beer allowed.......

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

I think there is a NCAA rule you can't serve alcohol if the facility is located on campus. The Qwest center is not part of the university I believe. There was beer served at Wells Fargo this year. Wish I could find the actual policy but some radio show debated this awhile back and that was their conclusion that any facility on a college campus could not serve beer at a NCAA sanctioned event.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

No beer allowed during ISU Athletic events, but it is sold during concerts. Even during Creighton games at the Qwest center they sell beer--not sure what permits that, but I don't believe it will be happening at Hilton anytime soon.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

If people don't go to Hilton to watch Big 12 basketball because they don't serve beer, then I just have 1 thing to say....AA.

Sure it would be nice to enjoy a couple of cold ones while watching our guys beat Nebraska on Wednesday but I'm not going to stay home because of it.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

Found something: http://www.ncaasports.com/story/8706763 towards the bottom it talks a little about alcohol policy. The NCAA is pushing to remove alcohol advertisements too I have read.

I would not mind being able to drink a cold one at games but it's not the reason why I go to games plus it's saving me about $6 a beer by not having the option to buy it so just more money to go out and celebrate later really.

They sell beer in Boulder at the Coors Event Center (Foam Dome), and I'm fairly certain that it's on campus.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

I wonder how many college venues currently sell alcohol during ncaa events? Creighton must be one of the very few that do. I wonder if the ncaa will ever put any teeth in their "suggestion" for no alcohol sales. That would hurt Creightons attendance if there was no beer.
Still, $5 for a PBR is nuts......

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

I doubt it would hurt Creighton's attendance. They usually play good basketball that is fun to watch and make the tourney frequently. As long as the basketball being played doesn't take a dive they'll still get good crowds even without beer.

You can buy beer during Minnesota games at the Metrodome, and I don't think they'll be able to when they get their on campus stadium.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

CU doesn't sell beer anymore. They haven't for about 5 years. It was the Alamo being able to purchase beer at College games for the lay folk.

Now, if you go to the press boxes that's a whole other story.

    Re: Hilton Ownership/Maintenance

Re Creighton: It wouldn't hurt attendance really bad but it would hurt. Qwest is the place to be seen here in omaha during jays games. Alcohol adds to that. I really doubt they would get 11-13k for early season games if the current atmosphere didn't exist.
