NFL Commish to take pay cut

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell takes 20 percent pay cut - ESPN

This equates to roughly 2 mil.

Wonder what Jim Calhoun has to say about this?

Maybe you can't even compare the two stories. Interesting, though.

As much heat as Goodell takes he has been the best NFL commish of my lifetime I think.

Yet Selig is getting a raise....this is why the NFL gets it.

I generally like Goodell. I do think he can be a little overzealous when it comes to punishing players. I don't think he should be able to suspend someone for crimes that they have not yet been convicted of. Once the law finds them guilty, then have at it, but not before.

However, for the most part he has been fine.

He sets a good example. He should donate that 20% to retired player's fund. I know that's not the point of it, but those guys keep getting dicked by the NFLPA.

The thing about Goodell is he seems to be a smart businessman. He punishes players so hard because he doesn't want these knuckleheads to upset a sponsor. Think if Petco had naming rights to an NFL arena and not a baseball one, and Michael Vick played there.
I think that he just realizes that this is a business and even though there is a union, they are employees, subsequent to consequences like the real world.

Man, I hope Goodell can afford to put food on his table for a paltry 9 million. Is this his way of saying he sympathizes with the plight of the common man? Purely a PR move.

Maybe he can use some of that cash to give the people who got canned their jobs back, cause it isn't like each individual franchise is worth close to 1 BILLION or anything.

I totally agree with your post! Where is that $2 million going? The NFL will still have it somewhere...while $2 million is a lot of money...it isn't that much in the spectrum of the NFL!

you're right. it is just a drop in the bucket. The point is the gesture. who else is giving up 20% of their salary? And yes it is a PR movie. The NFL did have to let some people go. How many more would they have let go if not for the 2 mil that Goodell gave up?

If Goodell - or the league - wanted this to mean anything, they should have kept it quiet. Letting this out is totally self-serving.

Why keep it quiet? Why not let people know that you're doing something to try to keep as many people employed as possible?

They did it so that they can use that propaganda against the players' union when they negotiate a new agreement. "Times are tough, even the commissioner took a hit. The players need to as well." PR in more than one way!

    From the article:

"The league said Wednesday it has dropped 169 jobs as a result of buyouts, layoffs and other staff reductions."

The NFL makes hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions, every year. Each franchise is worth more than the New York Yankees (just for comparison). I'd be willing to bet that the folks who lost their jobs aren't impressed, considering that the league virtually prints it own money.

Hadn't thought of it that way....good point. However, the NFLPA is the strongest of all 4 major sports...we'll see what happens. I believe the current CBA expires after next season, if not 2 years from now.
