    Early Recruiting-Wid(en)er-Body DT's

For those of you out there who like the wide-bodied run stuffers (like KMAC), I just ran across a '10 recruit who fits the bill--in fact, I'd have to say that he's a Widener-body DT!

    Ryland Widener - Football Recruiting

I suppose he might have to slim down some, but it's nice to see some quality kids showing ISU some love, even this early on a long list.

Actually I find it interesting that Iowa is even listed. I don't ever remember recruiting a kid out of Oklahoma and I don't remember the last D-linemen we had or even recruited over 300lbs.

As I mentioned to Aclone recently Iowa doesn't seem to go after that many "true" high school D-tackles. Preferring quick under sized guys that they build up. Now whether that is by design or necessity who knows but its' hard to argue with their success. Contrarily Hundertmark is about the only D-tackle we currently have that was a D-tackle by listing when he was recruited. He did play as a true Frosh and we hope he'll be good.

The following is the list of "D-Tackles" Iowa has recruited since 2002. That is guys that were "called" DT's by rivals..........

Wesley Thibeaux 6-3 290-- Blinn, TX
Larry Thomas 6-1 265-- Miami, FL
    George Eshareturi 6-3 290--Bronx, NY
Richard Kittrell 6-5 303 New Haven, CT
Alex Willcox 6-2 265-- West Des Moines, IA
Ettore Ewen 6-0 280 Tampa, FL
Ryan Bain 6-2 250 Bolingbrook, IL
Justin Collins 6-2 250 Fort Worth, TX
Vernon Jackson 6-1 260 Orlando, FL
Alex Kanellis 6-4 239 Iowa City, IA
Cody Hundertmark 6-4 266 Humboldt, IA

..................As you can see they are from every where and some where even 4 star guys. A few helped a little early on but got injured or transferred. As a rule they have been very underwhelming. So I think Iowa is now mostly looking at DE's and Lbers to become Tackles. So I find it odd we are on his list.

By the time he made it to campus, he could fill two positions.

Dang! Nice stats on the guy. Good GPA too. Here is hoping.

Can anybody say 3-4? This guy would make it possible in a hurry.

Do you really think a bunch of ISU fans are interested in a detailed account of UI - DT recruiting since 2002?

On the flip side, I expect a bunch of Hawk fans would be very interested in your data and analysis.

I can say 3-4...but I don't think it works terribly well in college.

I'm pretty sure that at the least he could free up both the tackle and end next to him, though.

That is fine too. Or experiment with the 3-3-5 even. Just switch things up. I still get sick thinking about last years D, and how we ran the same scheme every week. And how certain QB's claimed they went against more complex D's in high school.

I truly think that GC knew he was getting the Auburn job from insiders in the middle of last season. He seemed to just be mailing it in for the second half of the season.
