    Putting in contacts

My son is a proud wearer of contacts as of yesterday. Things are going well, but Holy Mother of God, did we have a heck of a time putting them in this morning! Took us a half hour, and by the end, we were both cussing (well- me multiple times, him- one inadvertent s*** upon about the tenth drop).

He did really well getting them in and out at the eye doctor, but not so well this morning. Any tips?

    Re: Putting in contacts

It just takes practice and learning his own technique I think. When I first started wearing them it took me just as long. After a couple days or so he should have the hang of it. He just needs to practice and that's the best thing.

    How old is he?

I was in 6th grade when I got mine, and it just takes practice. It gets easier and easier each day. I remember struggling the first day, too.

An ether soaked rag ought to give you a few minutes to put them in without him struggling or blinking

Just short of 11. The tough thing is that he can't see real well without them, so he's about a half inch off the eye when he goes to put them in. He had them squarely in place several times, but they wanted to stick to his finger more than his eye. That's probably our main problem.

Practice is the only good tip! It will get better soon.

I am assuming soft- they are two week lenses, and fold over on themselves really easily.

Yeah, I wear hard ones. If I left them in for two weeks, my eyes might seal shut.

I'd just go heavy duty on the solution as you put em in. Might get messy, but it helps.

Not sure why but I always put a few drops of saline solution on my finger tip before picking the contact up. Then the contact seems to attach itself to my eye and stay in place. I also put a drop of saline solution on the contact before putting it in my eye. Good luck! Contacts are so much better than glasses...but they can be a pain in the backside as well!

I often find myself at the end of long days looking forward to taking my contacts out because it feels great to take them out!

    Re: Putting in contacts

I remember having to get up an hour early to get mine in when I first got them. The trick I found to help was to have a small personal mirror set up, then stare at my eyeball in the mirror as I put it in. Try to distract myself from the fact I'm touching my eye, which I know is next to impossible. Have plenty of saline in the contact and it will help it stick to your eye.

    Re: Putting in contacts

The first couple days I had to have one of my parents hold my eyelids open as I slowly put the contact in ... then inevitably it would fold over or be in backwards. You get a lot better at it, but it takes a little time. By the end of the week he should be improving dramatically.

Although I had a buddy that needed his eyes held open for like the first year ... he's kind of a ***** though.

    Re: Putting in contacts

Put the contact on the very top tip end of the finger, they wont stick to your finger that way. Look in the mirror, stretch your eye as far open as possible and put the contact in. When you have it on the very end of your finger, the contact will basically grab the eye and stick instead of having to put your whole finger in your eye.

    Re: Putting in contacts

when i put them in i would sometimes have an air bubble under the contact. then when you blink it would fold over and pop out. to keep that from happening keep your finger on the contact when it touches your eye and move it around to work the air bubble out. but like everbody says it takes a while to get the tecnique down.

or you could do what i do. once i get them in i leave them in for 2 months straight.
