Worst 3 Yr Span For MBB & FB In ISU History

It's looking more like we will end up with a losing record in MBB this year. If so, that will leave a losing record for both MBB and FB for each of the past 3 years.

Looking back through the Media Guides I can find no time that this has ever happened before in ISU history. That goes back to the start of MBB in 1919.

I don't buy that. Iowa State has not always been good at basketball and has never been good at football.

Makes you wonder who's been in charge these last 3 years, doesn't it?

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

Just glad it wasn't you, Monty, we'd have been winless. You'd have been off banging on your drum, and beating dead horses.

I don't understand this thread. What's the pathological need to pile more mud on top?

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.
    (They just disappear offseason)

The first year of men's basketball at Iowa State was 1908. Try again.

That's not the fact check you should be looking into. If the first part is right, that just means it hasn't happened in even longer!

What is the point in this thread? To "enlighten" people?
Pointing out how sucky two ISU sports are is a really laudable thing to do.

The point is to show how low ISU is at this point and question the why of how we got here and the how to get out.

The status quo around here is to say how awesome Pollard is, how awesome Mac is and how great everything is going to be ... next year. Guess what? we've been say it for 4 years and there are no signs of things looking up.

Coach Rhoads gets a few years to get his roster in order. But do you really think he gets 4 years to improve over 2 wins without people beginning to question him? Its the nature of college sports.

I have yet to see you post any alternative idea that would have caused ISU Football or Basketball to have achieved greatness in the last three years..

It's fans like you that make me sick. I would bet my last dollar that you have never done anything that amounts to anything in your life. You are one of those people that sit back and become the "master of the obvious". Hindsight is 20/20. All you do is complain, but since you are such an expert, what is your solution?

Jamie Pollard has unquestionable charecter. That is something that is lacking throughout collegiate athletics today. To build a program from the ground up takes time, patience, and alot of money. Patience is something many Cyclone fans don't have, but many do. Money has always been an obstacle at ISU. The media has made sure throughout the years that ISU is second fiddle to the Hawks, and Jamie is working his hardest to change that dynamic as well.

I loved Dan McCarney, but even you have to admit that "arguably" it might have been time to replace him given the record of his last couple teams. So Jamie made the change and brought in a guy that convinced Pollard that he was there to stay. Well, he lied. Short of putting a lie detector on the guy during the interview, a boss has to use his gut instincts during the interview. I personally was convinced Gene was staying, and so did Coach Mack Brown. Regarding hiring Mac, he was close to signing with Kansas State but held them off because he "wanted" to coach the Cyclones. Mac has been dealt some awfully crappy cards, and yet I bet he will work through it all.

Womens volleyball is among the nations elite, and that was Jamies hire. Womens basketball continues to do well, and although Bill wasn't Jamie's hire, keeping him hasn't been easy. Cael was a great hire, and time will prove that out.

So Monty, for once on your own, so all of us can see just how smart you really are, lay out a total plan for the athletic department to follow. I am curious as to see just how deep your pond is.

Jamie Pollard inherited a program that had gone to 5 bowl games, 2 NCAA tournaments, and 2 NIT's in the past 6 years, and had positive revenue (i.e. no support from the ISU General Fund). It did not need to be "built from the ground up" as you put it. There is a lot of value in stability -- just look at the top programs around the country. But Jamie came in with a slash-and-burn strategy. In his first 18 months he replaced the coaching staffs of 10 programs at a cost of $4 million. That is absurd -- what AD has ever done that? If an AD showed up at Missouri, Kansas, or Nebraska and did that, we'd be laughing our as$#s off. And of his 3 hires for major sports positions, he has gone 0-2 with one incomplete. In short, he was given complete control of what was a middle-of-the pack Big XII program, and made some huge changes in a gamble to make us a top tier program. If it had worked he would have taken all the credit, and deservedly so. But it didn't -- he has made us the "new Baylor" of the Big XII. And just like he should be rewarded had his risks payed off, he needs to be held accountable for his results.
