Three Cyclones Playing for Team USA

Oh, CF, its been far far too long. I'm sure you missed me as much as I missed you...

Anyways, I had to call attention to the fact that three Cyclone Hockey players are playing for the U.S. University Select Team at the 2009 Winter World University Games (Collegiate Olympics, basically).

Pete Majkozak, Brent Cornelius and Adam Mueller are all on the team. They were selected from the hundreds of ACHA hockey players to be part of the 22-player roster for Team USA.

Competition started today in Harbin, China at 2:30 a.m. ET, and Team USA pulled out a 5-4 OT win against Korea.

Cornelius scored the first goal of the game and Majkozak helped Team USA come back with the game-tying goal late in the third.

They have a tough bracket with Slovakia and Russia on their side. But with three Cyclones out there... I'm sure our national team is in good hands.

This is a huge accomplishment for these players and for Cyclone Hockey.

Also, if Iowa State sweeps Illinois this weekend in Champaign, the Cyclones will win the CSCHL regular season championship! They've done it five times before and to do it this year would be amazing. The team is rolling in conference with 13-0-1 record. That coming in the toughest conference in the nation. It's been a great year.

I only wish I could be in Ames to be a part of it.

It's good to be back at CF!

Wouldn't it be like club collegiate olympics basically? Since there aren't any D1 players on the team?

Not to take anything away from them, just wanted to state the facts.

That's basically true, except that no other country is sending their club players. In many cases in hockey, the European and Asian will send their best college-aged players. Except for in the U.S. and Canada, the World University Games is a huge deal. It's a major international event....

Team USA beat Korea, Slovakia (a perennial favorite) and China, while falling to Russia and Japan. So the U.S. finished seventh in the tournament, which is the best they've done there.

It was a really great tournament and the guys played great from what I heard.

Anfu Wang, an ISU Hockey legend and native of Harbin, was a team official out there. I don't know if anyone ever got to see him play, but he is considered the best hockey player in China. He even was named one of the country's top athletes of the 1990s...

Just a little Cyclone Hockey Trivia there...

Boy to I miss being out in Ames!!!
