    Burnham's Defensive strategy...

I'm sure this is buried somewhere in a 12 page thread, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to get this discussion out in the open. What was his base defense at USF? I read that he said it's going to be an attacking defense, but thats kind of vague. Does he run a lot of man to man, have good blitz packages, etc? I've seen USF (I think Jim Leavitt is one of the best coaches in the game) a few times, but paid a lot more attention to their offense and the stud qb Grothe...

I think I read 4-3 and heavily reliant on having 2 stud corners.

Well, we got one. That's a start. Hopefully Kennard Banks or Terran Benton become a real presence out there this fall.

    Re: Burnham's Defensive strategy...

Here is a good link somebody posted last night, sounds like what you're looking for: South Florida owes its success to defense guru

First, lock your cornerbacks onto two spread receivers, and it helps to have a pair of NFL-caliber cornerbacks. If it's a run, those corners must quickly shed the receivers' blocks and make plays. If it's a rare pass, those corners must win one-on-one battles.
Meantime, the other nine defenders crowd the line -- oh, maybe a safety stays in the rear or covers a slotback -- and they all flow with the zone blockers, clogging the rush lanes.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Oh, and before any Nazi's come after me, I know his name is Burnham, not Brunham. That was a typo, and I don't know how to edit thread titles.

reminds me of KSUs Defense in the late 90s.

You really need to buy a copy of Phil Steele's College Football Preview.

I comes out, the 1st week of every June. It is basically the Bible for College Football. I look at it everyday durning the Football season, and every month during the Off Season.

    USF ran a 4-3.

I think if you go to your original post, you can click Edit, and then there is a Go Advanced button. Click that and you should be able to change the title, but I think it only applies to the first post and I'm not sure if the change shows up in the forums list.

I think they developed a lot of the talent they have had up front. I think a lot of emphasis was put on recruiting speed and not relying on size. Only recently has the recruitiing ramped up to the current level. Wally might have some adjustments to make, but he has seen enought talent and defenses to make those adjustments.
Thats what I love about our new staff. They are smart enough to adjust their scheme to the players available instead of pushing existing talent into and ill-matched scheme.

    Re: Burnham's Defensive strategy...

Man, there are plenty of times I wish Iowa would adopt a more attacking style of defense. You might give up the big plays occassionally, but with a defense like that, if you get on a roll, you can really smother and demoralize an opponent. Do you guys have the linebackers to shoot through and make the tackles on the run plays?
