    2009 Qualifier Allocation Criteria

2009 automatic qualifiers (250-300 of the 330 championships field) will be determined by using the primary criteria formula described below and will be communicated to all qualifying events on February 26, 2009.

After all qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select at-large qualifiers using secondary criteria, also described below. Wildcard selections at qualifying events have been eliminated. All weight classes at the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will consist of 33 wrestlers. At-large qualifiers will be announced on March 11, 2009.

Primary Criteria Formula. On February 23, 2009, wrestlers in each weight class will be measured on the following: winning percentage (Win %), rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ ranking (CR). Win % is defined as Division I wins divided by total Division I matches contested. RPI is defined as Win % * opponents’ Win % * opponents’ opponents’ Win % (15 match minimum). CR is defined as the weight class specific ranking as determined by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Pre-seed Committee.

Wrestlers that meet or exceed threshold levels for all three measures will be labeled “Gold Standard.” Wrestlers that meet or exceed threshold levels for any two of the three measures will be labeled “Silver Standard.” All Gold Standard and Silver Standard wrestlers will earn a qualifier position for their respective weight class at their respective qualifying event. If a qualifying event does not have any Gold Standard or Silver Standard wrestlers at a weight class, one qualifier position will be allocated for that qualifying event’s champion at that weight class. (Based on 2008 data, 260 automatic qualifying positions of the 330 championships field would have been allocated to qualifying events via the primary formula using threshold levels of .750 Win %, Top 25 RPI, and Top 25 CR.) It is the intent of the committee to allocate between 250-300 automatic qualifiers of the 330 championships field in 2009 using the primary formula. Threshold levels may slide up or down in concert (i.e., slide up to .800 Win%, Top 20 RPI and Top 20 CR or slide down to .700 Win %, Top 30 RPI and Top 30 CR) to achieve a total number of automatic qualifiers in the desired range.

Secondary Criteria. On March 9, 2009, wrestlers in each weight class will receive an updated Win % and RPI that includes all competition through the qualifying events. Wrestlers that meet or exceed any one of the following criteria will be labeled “Bronze Standard”:

    • .700 Win %
    • Top 33 RPI
    • Top 33 CR (2/23/09 measure)
    • .700 winning percentage against all competition
    • One win against a wrestler receiving automatic qualification
    • Qualifying event placement one below automatic qualification

Only Bronze Standard wrestlers will be eligible for selection as at-large qualifiers. A wrestler must have participated in their respective conference or regional qualifying tournament in order to be considered for at-large selection to the championships. The NCAA Wrestling Committee will use the following criteria to evaluate the Bronze Standard wrestlers:

    • Head-to-head competition
    • Qualifying event placement
    • Quality wins
    • Results against common opponents
    • Win %
    • RPI
    • CR
    • Number of matches contested at that weight class

So we are guaranteed 7 and the two silver guys should make. How does Burke go about getting in? If he wins the BXII tourny he is not a lock? This looks like it was written up by lawyers!

    Nobody is guaranteed anything.

The wrestlers earn qualifying spots for their conference. If there are 3 spots at, say, 174, then the top 3 finishers at 174 earn those NCAA bids. Just because a guy earns a spot for his weight class doesn't necessarily mean he's going to advance. He still has to perform at the conference tournament.

    Re: Big 12 Tournament Seeds

Awesome 2007, I was just reading the RPI and coaches ranks on illinoismatmen and was going to ask if you knew how many a****ids the B12 got.

on a completely unrelated note, I am watching Michigan-tOSU on the BTN right now, and I can sorta see why Varner lost to pucillo last year. last year varners O was sorta lacking, and he looks better most times this year. Pucillo on the other hand is an offensive freak. Heck, even those Iowa boys could learn a thing or two from him.

Pucillo has a big test this Friday. Round 1 between Mike Pucillo and Jake Herbert. Here's some general info.

Jake Herbert: Current Record: 24-0. 23 of his wins are by bonus points
Mike Pucillo: Current Record: 14-0. 10 of his wins are by bonus points

    Common opponents:

Mike 10-2 Anthony Biondo Jake 16-6
Mike TF Sonny Yohn Jake 16-5
Mike 6-1 Dustin Kilgore Jake 6-3
Mike Pin Eric Cameron Jake 2 pins
Mike MD Dorian Henderson Jake Pin

Last season: Mike won two very close matches with Phil Keddy.
This season: Herbert almost TF'd Keddy.

Last season: Mike won by RT advantage in 4 OT over Varner
Last season: Herbert lost in regulation at Midlands against Varner

Herbert and Pucillo are of course the last 2 NCAA champs at 184. Varner lost to both in finals. Herbert took an Olympic redshirt last year.

So they will reclassify into the gold, silver, bronze after the tourny and then pick who goes? The BXII doesnt decide this year its the NCAA? I get more confused the more I read this.

This must be Wrestling's version of MARCH MADNESS

    Re: Big 12 Tournament Seeds

Will this be the Seeding for the Big 12 Tournament?

I see Gallick is a #1 Seed over Hoehn from Mizzou. That would sure be nice for ISU, but not sure if it is Fair considering Hoehn has not lost in Big 12 competition.

Also, thanks for the all the great information. I will be in Lincoln for both the Dual this Sunday and the Big 12 Tournament.

This must be Wrestling's version of MARCH MADNESS
The regular season ends Feb. 22. The NCAA will crunch all the numbers for every wrestler, at every weight. On Feb. 26, each conference will be notified of how many automatic qualifiers it will receive at each weight. Wrestlers that finish in the Top "x" will earn an NCAA berth.

Gold, Silver and Bronze are just terms for dividing the wrestlers into three groups based on 2008-09 performance. There are three main criteria that the NCAA uses:
    (1) Winning percentage against D-1 opponents
    (2) RPI [Win Pct * Opp Win Pct * Opp Opp Win Pct]
    (3) Coaches' Ranking

The baseline numbers are .750, Top 25, Top 25. If a wrestler meets 2 (Silver) or 3 (Gold) of those numbers, he earns his conference a spot at the NCAA.

For example...at 149, Mueller and Terry are the only guys that currently meet the Silver or Gold standard. That means the Big 12 would get 2 automatic spots at NCAA at 149. However, those spots aren't guaranteed to go to Mueller and Terry. It will be the top 2 finishers at the Big 12 Tournament. It is entirely possible that a wrestler earns a bid for his conference, and doesn't wrestle well enough at the conference tournament to grab one of those bids.

Not necessarily. There are still two conference duals left, and sometimes the seeding meetings get a little chippy. Official seeds/brackets won't come out until the night before.
