    Hamilton vs Aldrich

I'd been thinking of the comparison between the two players, aside from the fact that Aldrich was a highly touted signee who had played basketball most of his life, they're not all that dissimilar. Especially in size, skills and athletic ability. Sure, Aldrich looks much more fit this season, as he averages 14.6 ppg, 10.2 rpg and 2.6 bpg (despite a nagging injury), but he looked a lot softer (and plodding) last season as a frosh.

So I thought I'd take a look at his freshman numbers, and compare them to Justin Hamilton's this season. Frankly, I was a little surprised by what I saw. I know, Aldrich's numbers were skewed by all of the upperclassmen he was behind (Arthur, Jackson and Kaun), but Justin is sharing the frontcourt with Craig, AT and Jamie, so it's not like he's out there thirty-five minutes a game. Or with Craig, the focus of the offense.

As a frosh, Cole Aldrich averaged 2.8 ppg, 3rpg, and 0.9 bpg, in 8.3 minutes per game. 51.8% from the field, 68.4% from the line.

Justin Hamilton is averaging 4.7ppg, 3.3 rpg and 0.7 bpg in 14.7 mpg. 57.5% from the field, 64.2% from the line.

My point being that if Justin continues to work hard, tones his body and improves his quickness, explosiveness and athleticism, I wouldn't be surprised to see him make a simlar leap to that which Aldrich did. All right, maybe not quite so gaudy a step up, but I'd happily take 8rpg out of Justin next season, with Brackins back or not.

Some people might want a more athletic and explosive guy up front, but Aldrich isn't half bad, either. And not everyone can have a Hasheem Thabeet. So I'm really looking forward to Justin's next three seasons.

    Re: Hamilton vs Aldrich

I would be happy with improvement next year. Hamilton looks like he could be very good in the next 3.5 years. A transition for Hamilton like Aldrich is having this year would be incredible.

I would take it if Hamilton turned in a couple of Aldrich like performances next year.

If Ham turns into a Cole Aldrich next year after only playing for 4 years, I'll be amazed.
People have been working on their basketball skills their whole life, and most don't even make it to the DI collegiate level.

Ham was already amazing me. And for an ex football player, he's got a really nice touch on the baseline jumper.

If we could get that from Hamilton next year, hopefully it is because he worked his *** off in the offseason, and not because he's our only scoring option and we're averaging 41 ppg.

With another player like that on the blocks to go with CB, I would think we'd win some more games--let's hope it happens!

    Re: Hamilton vs Aldrich

Big guys develop the slowest. So there is always room for big guys to get better. Improving quickness is possible but the amount you improve will be minimal. You are born with a certain % of quick reflex muscle and you die with that same %. You can make that % work harder but you will never gain quick reflex muscles. I haven't seen Hamilton enough to make a judgement on his athletic ability, but Cole is actually pretty athletic for his size. If Hamilton can get from point A to B faster then his opponent he's going to turn into a really good player for you.

    Re: Hamilton vs Aldrich

I think he will be a very good player. He has shown flashes of what he is capable of doing, but right now, he is just too raw. Get another year under his belt and I think he will improve immensely. I really think a redshirt would've done wonders, but we need him now, which kind of sucks

    Re: Hamilton vs Aldrich

There is no way Hamilton makes Aldrich-like transformation next year. Why not? Because if he did that and Gilstrap lives up to the atleast 75% of the hype and Brackins comes back (and everyone else is where they are now) we are looking at a sweet 16 team, and that is just not going to happen because...well...we're cyclones and we just don't have awesome things like that fall into our laps.

That said, I am still excited for both next year and Hamilton over the next 3 years. Can anyone say that we have had anyone get WORSE 1 year to the next under our current coaching? Everyone improves (some more than others) but there was one thing that I HATED about Morgan is that his guys were what they were from day 1. There seemed to be little improvement with Blalock/Stinson from freshmen year to their junior year.

Yep, this thread has just been pwned.

I'm happy we actually have a big man now who actually slams it down (besides Brackins), and doesn't just try and lay it up and in. Watching Thompson about killed me cause he would have a wide open dunk, but instead he intended on throwing up some hook shot, or he would just flat out get rejected.

    Re: Hamilton vs Aldrich

I would like to see this team be much more physical next year. Hopefully Craig stays and Ham will have a year under his belt, Gilstrap comes in and is the wing that we really need, DG will finally be that consistant PG, and that Colvin can come in and contribute right away. Plus having Lucca, Vanderbeken, Buckley off the bench would be great

I have actually only seen Hamilton do this once. Unless you know of another big man that likes to dunk, I do not know what you are talking about
