Eustachy On a 5-Game Losing Streak.

Doesn't look like 9th-place So Miss will make the NIT in LE's (what is it 4th / 5th) season? Anybody want to offer their opinion how such an excellent coach can be struggling? I remember some predicting he would have had this school in the Dance by now.

Re: Eustachy On a 5-Game Losing Streak.

In 18 years as a NCAA men's basketball head coach Larry has led his teams to the NCAA tournament 3 times. Two of those came at ISU with players he inherited from Tim Floyd. Why would anyone think he would have led Southern Miss to the dance by now? He is struggling because he is not a good basketball coach, at least at this level.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

How have his recruiting classes been down there? I always thought recruiting was his weak spot.

Agree totally but here comes the we want LE or WM crowd back since we thrived under them! LE owes everything he had to Floyd.

He deserves one more year. They return quite a bit for next year. That being said, they've underachieved this year.

I don't follow Southern Miss closely enough to know. But recruiting is a big part, maybe the biggest part, of college basketball coaching. And I agree, Larry was not a great recruiter. He did bring in Tinsley who was a big part of his two great years, but he was never able to parlay that success into any great recruiting years or winning teams.

He won two Big 12 titles at Iowa State. Three if you count the Big12 tourney he won.

I guess that's why people hold him in high regard.

Re: Eustachy On a 5-Game Losing Streak.

Wow I'm continually amazed by the dense posts on LE...Tinsley and Kantrail weren't integral to the 2nd Big 12 title team I take it.
Stinson and Blalock weren't any good either, nor was our all-time 3pt shooter. Nor was the Big 10's leading scorer, nor was Tyrae Pearson, etc...

Then they say LE didn't recruit them, an assistant did. But Floyd recruited all "his" guys personally. Uh huh. That's why Floyd has always complained publically about hating recruiting. The assistants recruit, the coach closes and develops the players. LE made Fizer a man. He made Rancik and Shirley men. He made Nurse a man, etc, etc, etc -just them personally and tell them personally how much you think LE sucks, if you have the balls. And while you're there tell Homan how much he sucks, that LE and staff couldn't recruit.

Some bozos are pretty damn quick to discount everything LE accomplished for their own dim-witted fun. 6th and 10th in the country in the final AP polls in our Big 12 title runs ring a little louder for me than a few crappy seasons. We've had plenty of those crappy seasons pretty consistently in our history. Where are all our titles? That's right, LE brought them to us.

He has the 2nd best winning % in the modern era at both Idaho and Utah State. All you can do is win at those schools and hope for an invite to the dance, and he did plenty of winning.

Try not to let facts get in your way when telling us why we should all hate LE and be sorry he ever came here.

    Go Cyclones!

He also has 6 regular season conference titles, 2 conference tournament titles, 4 conference COY awards and 1 National COY award. Clearly a man with no coaching ability.

Re: Eustachy On a 5-Game Losing Streak.

Wasn't Michael Nurse his recruit too? He was a big part of that Elite 8 team too. LE just added the right pieces to that 12-18 team he inherited from Floyd. I believe Homan and Vroman were his guys too. Technically Stinson and Blalock were his recruits too although having Morgan on his staff that found those 2 were a big part of it too. I still say had LE not messed up a good thing with Morgan bringing in the recruits and him doing the game day coaching we would have had some great years.
