If you play the number game, there would have to be atleast one other earth like planet.

Re: Another Earth is Out There!

yes, but there is more to earth than appears. while a similar size planet might be relatively common in the universe it doesn't mean that an Earth like planet is common. Earth may be just the perfect coincidence of events to allow us to exist. The perfect size planet at the perfect distance from a perfect size and type of sun...not too warm, not too hot. Water. Atmosphere. These two may be products of the first set of perfect coincidences. Then we have a single moon, large relative to the planet it orbits and close. It keeps our axis straight, allows for weather and season cycles that are predictable and long enough for growing. Another moon, a smaller moon, or a moon farther away would not necessarily allow these things. Now, the universe may well be near infinite so that allows for quite a lot but my guess is that the numbers of "earth-like" planets that are "just right" may be quite small.

I wonder if Iowa State on other planets has a better conference record than ours? Couldn't find anything on the 'net.

Re: Another Earth is Out There!

i dont understand why they always assume that these other earthlike planets would have to be similar to earth 3 billion years ago.

why couldnt it be like us or even far advanced? especially if the universe was all created at the same time, to me it would make sense to have planets that are just as advanced as us.....

Great post. This is because of the inherent arrogance that we as a human race have. This is why it is man made global warming and absolutely nothing to do with the sun. (not to drag this to the cave)

I also agree some of this 'research' is an incredible waste of money. Luckily there are hundreds of millions from the 'stimulus' package that will help determine if there are other moons like ours that exist.

If we find intelligent life on another planet the way we think of ourselves and our enemies our government will totally change

It's amusing how hot and bothered the idea of other planets with intelligent life gets some people.

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

Not unless they've got more rich donors.
