    McDermott Getting Out-Coached In 2nd Half

    I noticed it early in the season and dismissed it as inexperience, but it bugged me the way Iowa and S Dakota St outplayed us in the second half. Now, deep into the season, I'm really concerned the half-time adjustments by opposing coaches is resulting in double-digit whoopings on my 'Clones.

    This can't be due to inexperience, new players, lack of talent, etc - how do you explain the losses to Hawaii / Iowa / SDSU / Colorado games?

    I hold the coach responsible and I'm concerned GMcD is getting out-coached in the 2nd half as opposing coaches make better half-time adjustments.

    @Hawaii: down 3 at half (-3)...lose by 1 (-1)
    Drake: +4.....-3
    Iowa: -2.......16
    SDSU: +2.....-7
    @UT: -4.....-8
    @MU: -9....-31
    KU: -6......-15
    @CU: +2....-6
    OU: tied....-10
    @KSU: -5...-15
    MU: -6.......-14
    @OSU: -2...-19

    I'm wondering if its more of a conditioning issue.

    Unhappy Re: McDermott Getting Out-Coached In 2nd Half

    I won't speak to the other games, but Travis Ford didn't have to adjust much at half-time yesterday!

    TF: "You dummies! They have a freshman center and their guards couldn't keep a bulldozer from penetrating the lane! Quit jacking up quick threes and we'll blow them out!"

    Team: "Ok, Coach".

    Sheez, I coulda' made that adjustment! It's not the coach so much as the players the coach is putting on the court.

    Re: McDermott Getting Out-Coached In 2nd Half

    While I kind of agree he didn't really get outcoached yesterday. (Besides going man to man way to long in the second half)

    By the way, we didn't lose by 11 to Hawaii

    Coaches don't play defense. Players do or should.

    It's easy. We are one dimensional. Either get it into Craig, or hit the 3.

    Period.

    What's so hard about defending that?

    It actually should be kind of hard to defend. When you have someone as talented as Craig down low, it puts pressure on the defense, and forces the double. When they double, we should have a wide open shot

    We really are not that good of a shooting team.

    I'd be glad to read your opinion regarding our coaching performance vs: Hou Baptist / SIU-Ed / Mercer / Oregon ST / Miss Valley, etc.

    I think UNI is our best win this year; or maybe the blow-out of CU

    BINGO!

    Double- and triple-teams against Brackins can and will free up our outside shooters like Staiger and Eik for 3's. They just aren't good shooters. I'd say our shooters are in a slump, but when a slump lasts for most of the season, it's probably not a slump. If we had a shooter like Jake Sullivan this year, we'd have several more wins than we do right now.

    Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

    My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk,superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

    I agree and this is why Iowa was so effective using Tate on Brackins and separating from us in the second half - great adjustment by coach Lick

    Re: McDermott Getting Out-Coached In 2nd Half

    I think it's a combination of coaching, conditioning, and inexperience.

    1) Coaching - (Out of Game) our players tend to lose focus and make poor decisions typically about 30-35 minutes into the game. All it takes is a 10-0 run by the opponent and they start playing tight, in essence not to lose. GMac needs to coach the guys up and get them comfortable where they know they can climb out of a hole. This is more on the players and attributed to experience more than anything. (In Game) We're playing with a very thin margin of error. A 4-6 point run wouldn't be insurmountable, but a 10-12 point run is. GMac needs to identify the 4-6 point runs and make an adjustment before they hit the 10-12 point mark. This is directly on GMac.

    2. Conditioning - By the time the 30 minute mark rolls around, our guys seem to be unable to press the ball. they play passively. The starters, the players who have the ability to press the ball, have to be spelled by guys who really aren't athletically able to press it. The result is, we get a slow(er) style of basketball that is easy to defend. The 4-6 point runs turn into 10-12 point runs, and it's game over. Basically, we need athletic back-ups who can put the ball on the court and score. We don't have that right now.

    3. Inexperience - We're still starting 3 sophs, 1 frosh, and 1 former walk-on senior. At this point, these guys don't have any experience of making a come-back to draw on to be able to do it consistently. Basketball is a game of runs, and once we're on the wrong side of one, we don't seem to have the mentality that we can bring it back. What is missing more than anything from this team, is a desire to just straight up **** the other team up. We saw that the first half against Colorado, where the guys just clamped down on CO's throat. I'm hopeful that we'll see more of that as these guys grow up. They can do it, but they need to know that they can do it. You can't buy experience, you've got to let it come the hard way. However, next year will be the first time GMac will have an upperclassman he brought in as a frosh. The first time. Experience is coming, I just hope we return everyone next year for the first time in the GMac era.
