Focus on the state, but don't focus too much on the state. There is some great talent in Iowa for next years recruiting though

"It's not the kids that you lose in recruiting that hurt you," Rhoads said. "It's the kids that you get that you miss on. Everybody loses kids to somebody else, but the ones that you get that you weren't right on, that you didn't evaluate correctly, those are the ones that really get you."

Coach gets the importance of player RETENTION and LT development - that's the way 2 and 3 star players turn into 4 and 5 star contributors. Now let's hope he and his staff can deliver.

A "great" article? Gah! They just had to throw the Cornhuskers into it!

Seriously, not a bad article, but the program won't live or die on the walkons. They have to get quality athletes across the board, and keep them in school for four or five years.

Actually it's a Ames Trib article that the Herald republished

They talk about Kroul and King as if they were diamond-in-th-rough walkons. As 3-star recruits, we knew they would be good, we just weren't competitive in recruiting them (that was before Cheezwiz). The question for roads is not how does he better evaluate instate talent than Ferentz (although i hope he does a better job of it than Mac), but rather how does he out-sell Ferentz. Show me that, then I will be excited.

Just making sure credit goes where it's due. Bobby LaGesse does a pretty good job at the Trib.

Agree and disagree. I'm not too caught up in stars (as in not at all) and though they were 3's they were jumping positions from 230 lb Lbers to D-tackles. The key for Iowa is seeing where they project and if they "can"! They signed several TE's and Lbers again this year that will move positions.

    Making stars almost moot!

Re: Rhoads to Focus on Iowa Recruits

The most important thing in that article was the stat about Iowans in the NFL. We, per capita, are 11th in putting guys into the league. This state produces a quality of player that is very much under appreciated. Grab a few speedy dudes from Texas/Florida and fill the rest with Iowa kids...thats a winner.
