    Weather gurus out there-

WHat are you thinking about this Friday storm.
I didn't have the sound up on the TV getting ready this morning, but the band across central Iowa said 6". What are you guys predicting as far as amounts and when and what are the factors playing into that?

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

    Re: Weather gurus out there-

I'm far from a weather guru, but having lived in Iowa my whole life, my prediction is:

-Weather guy will be off by 3 inches (plus or minus, probably minus).
-Saturday will end up above freezing and start melting some of it already.
-Looking ahead, I'm more worried about next Tuesday. Snow/rain mix with the temp hoovering right around freezing. Makes for a crappy, heavy, icy mess.

Not a good time of year to have a job as an auto claims adjuster.

If the local weather people say 6 inches, I'll say a trace to 2. If they say a trace to 2, I'll say 6.

    Re: Weather gurus out there-

The past 2 model runs have back off precipitation amounts by a significant amount. I'd say theres still good chances of 6+ inches in a swath somewhere south of I-80. The whole southern 2/3rds of the state looks good for a solid 3-5 inches of snow. Have to keep monitoring to see if the models swing back towards a stronger system over the next couple of days.

One last snow so that I can empty out the gas in my snowblower.

when it constantly changes like that it means it will rain most of the time and have a trace of snow. haha

    Re: Weather gurus out there-

There is a good chance of 4-6 inches along and south of 80. As someone previously stated the lastest model runs have hinted at a southward shift, this is possible but I will believe it when I see it. Tomorrow will be very important in terms of temperature and cloudiness.

    Re: Weather gurus out there-

Forecasting snow totals is very challenging. The models have a hard enough time pinning down the location, timing, and amount of liquid precipitation but snow is even harder. An inch of liquid precipitation that falls as snow can range from 10 to 20 inches. So errors in the liquid precipitation forecast get magnified 10-20 times when making a snow total forecast.

It looks like the roads are already zero to 100% snow/ice covered.

Ok, so it's closer to zero than 100%.
