McCarney: MN job "one of the best..."

Update on DMac in todays paper...he calls the Minnesota job one of the best in the country. While I don't think he has any chance for the job, he would be good for Minnesota in my view.

Re: McCarney: MN job "one of the best..."

While I really hope he gets it, I don't see it happening at all.

If the situation was reversed and we hire Mason from MN after being fired (I believe he has a much better record that Mac), would that excite you? Not me.

Mason had the same problems in MN, they went to the Music City Bowl like 29 times in a row. He couldn't get MN to the "next level" either.

Good points. I doubt Gopher fans would consider this an exciting hire.

It is slim pickings for them too. I look for them to go after a good D-1AA coach or assistant.

Re: McCarney: MN job "one of the best..."

I'm sure D-Mac will land on his feet and find a good coaching job somewhere. Glen Mason was the other candidate for the isu job when we hired Jim Walden after the 1986 season, and in retrospect Glen Mason would probably have been a better coach than Walden.

For the record Glen Mason was an assistant coach under Earle Bruce when Earle won 24 games in three years and still is the only coach in my lifetime who had a career winning record at Iowa State.

I am eternally grateful that Jamie Pollard wrapped up Gene Chizik and brought him to Ames, or we might have been stuck in the same place as Minnesota is right now.

Good Luck Minnie Your Gonna Need It The Way It Looks!

I think he will do better in Minnesota than he did at ISU. DMac is a good coach, just not a good gameday coach. Wherever he lands, I think he will be a good hire.

Not to bag on you or DMac, but how does he make a good head coach if he can't deliver the goods on gameday??

I think one of DMac 's problems was that much like Hayden Frey, Dan was too loyal to his asst. HF never fired an asst. and Dan only fired two a couple of years ago. With a fresh start and a chance to bring in an all new staff, I think Dan could do well.

Re: McCarney: MN job "one of the best..."

Before all the D-Mac Homers jump on this thread as Mac Bashing.........let's all step back and realize D-Mac name will probably be mentioned the next few weeks with some coaching vacancies........will he coach again?...yes, he wants to.

Will he get a D-I head job this year I doubt it.......No, he doesn't coach at ISU anymore and yes, he got bashed everyday on this site and yes it will happen again and again as his name comes up. Some where some clone fan will find an article with D-Mac being mentioned as a possible replacement. Some one will post something and away we go....Homers chime in and D-Mac will be remembered...on and on.......IMO lets all agree to disagree everytime D-Mac come up.........he will land on his feet somewhere, but not at ISU again.

Re: McCarney: MN job "one of the best..."

McCarney said the Minnesota opening was "not a good job, it's a great job" and that he had "no doubt" it was one of the best in the nation.

Tremendous use of the "no doubt" phrase.

I've got a buddy up in Minn. UM is saying the same things that Pollard said down here. They're not going cheap, they want someone to get them to the next level. They have a new stadium opening up in a couple years. I've heard talk of Coker, Tice and Chryst.

How about that famous "D-Mac spin"

Mac will make a great head coach somewhere, but I agree that given the reasons for Mason's dismissal, I can't see them bringing him in. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mac in a MAC or Mountain west job this year, if the dominoes fall right.

Re: McCarney: MN job "one of the best..."

    Some points to consider:

Mason wasn't let go because of his record. The AD was tired of Mason's ego and arrogant attitude. The bowl game embarrassment gave the AD the opportunity that he had been waiting for.

Mac's strong points (university promotion, department unity, and fan interaction) are what the AD wanted to see out of Mason.

Mason used his Ohio connections to pull in some very talented players. Mac would need some better assistants with real connections to match this. Mason had some excellent assistants who would certainly be willing to stay on.

Minnesota could be a hidden gem. Very few if any states have a population of 5 million with only one major D1 university. I know that there is the pro sports argument, but these same fans also want a college team to follow and pull for.

Minnesota has huge trophy game rivalrys with the hawkeyes and badgers. Mac would make these target games and win his share of them.
