    Re: NCAA Tourny Sites 2009 & 2010

First and Second Round site may be less relevant as we creep up in seed. Few teams travel as well as well, and fewer places will give the home court advantage that Hilton has. Regardless of site and seed, to advance you have to win. If we're the highest seed on site - we have a good chance to win.

Of the bracket considerations and principles, avoiding rematches is not the most prominent. Avoiding a conference foe would be more important. The more Big XII teams in, the more likely we could end up in Iowa City.

Weve got a pretty good football conference, and weve got a pretty good conference overall. Were still walking around with our heads held high and our chest out, about that. Paul Rhoads

    Re: NCAA Tourny Sites 2009 & 2010

Some interesting/pertinent rules from the document:

There shall not be more than two teams from a conference in one region and conference teams shall not meet each other prior to the regional final unless a ninth team is selected from a conference.
This rule really handcuffs the committee a lot. The Big 12 will likely get 7 teams in.

The committee shall attempt to avoid moving a team or a conference out of its natural region or geographic area an inordinate number of times and will examine the previous three tournament brackets to determine the number of times a team or conference has been assigned out of its natural region.
    For ISU:
    2008: Des Moines
    2007: Minneapolis
    2006: WNIT
It may be our turn to be sent far away.

If possible, rematches of regular-season games should be avoided in the first- and second-rounds.
This is certainly not as important as the conference one above (that one is a rule and this one is a guideline) but I can see the committee placing a team like Kansas State in Iowa City and sending us to, say, Notre Dame or East Lansing.

I was one that said recently that I thought we were a host site in 2011 because I thought I heard that somewhere. But you're right, I don't think that's been announced. Here's an article from cyclones.com from a year ago that only mentions us as a host site in 2010...

If that was posted a year ago, I would think we will hear whether we'll be a host site in 2011 soon?

    Re: NCAA Tourny Sites 2009 & 2010

I believe you can host subregionals two years out of every three. We aren't hosting this year, so I expect us to host in 2011.

I looked briefly for the hosting rules but didn't find them. I'll look some more.

    Re: NCAA Tourny Sites 2009 & 2010

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't they usually have two separate regions playing at each site? I remember last year we obviously had the region we were in playing there then whatever region FSU and OSU were in.

It is very conceivable that we end up in Iowa City with K-State and not in the same region. Put Iowa and K-State in the same region.

Nope, they changed the rules back this year - only one region per site now.

They used to only do 8 sites, with 4 first round games at each site. Now, it's 16 sites with 2 first round games at each site.

Iowa is poised to tank. They are down to one healthy post player, and are just 14-9, 7-5 in the Big Ten.

Huh? Iowa has won 6 of their last 7 games and have the easiest games coming up. Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Northwestern should give the Hawks at least 4 wins, and a shot at Ohio State.

Iowas OOC schedule will DEFINITELY work in their favor, with losses coming to Kansas, Duke, California, and South Florida, and wins over Texas Tech and Iowa State.

They'll still need Hamlin, though. They are 2-2 without her (last 4 games). One of those wins was a 3OT home win over Penn State (3-8).

Methinks the ones bolded aren't going to help you out nearly as much as you think they are (especially losing by 20+ to Kansas), although Duke, Cal, and ISU will add to their resume. But losing by 24 to Duke and by 33 at home to Cal is going to look just as bad as our beat-down at Stanford. You don't get near as much credit as you would like to think when you lose that ugly...
