It looks like Wes will elevate our team free throw %.

Bear in mind that while his stats are impressive, that he is not playing at a very high level of competition. High school stats often don't tell much of a story. Look at Tyler Norman's high school stats from the last couple of years. I don't think Tyler has even suited up for a game this year. Another thing to consider is whether there will be playing time available for Eik since we already have Dunson and Jacobsen, with Garrett, Buckley, and Staiger coming in. Just food for thought.

Uhh, if Eikmeier doesn't get playing time over Jacobsen he was an absolute waste of a scholarship, and I mean that in the nicest possible way.

is Jacobsen a walk-on? He seems like great kid, very coachable, but I think the big 12 is a bit above his current abilities. I would fully expect Wes to get playing time as a freshman.

Excellent point Bryce, but I can almost guarantee you Eik won't play ahead of Garrett, Buckley, Staiger, or probably Dunson either. There is always the chance that one or more of the others will not be here. I still think Michigan is going to put on a full court press to steal Buckley before the deal is sealed in ink.

My guess is that Eik would probably Redshirt his freshman year.

I don't think he will Redshirt, we will need more guards, because McIntosh, and Taylor will be gone. I think Wes will be a great player

    Re: Wes Eikmeier articles

I guess I think of Wes as a Jake Sullivan-type. He's a great shooter who's a gym rat and is willing to put in the time to improve his game. May not be ultra-athletic or knock-your-socks-off quick but can stroke it from downtown and contribute to the roll he's intended to play. With the new guys coming in we should have plenty of slasher/create-your-own-shot types that will be able to hit Wes for the three ball. Never seen him play, just my opinion.

    Re: Wes Eikmeier articles

I don't think people should make up their mind on recruits before they ever step foot on the floor...And Jacobson is a walk-on, who's hard work and knowledge of McDermott's system has earned him playing time...I also don't think people should rip on their own team's players that are giving a full effort. Brock isn't that athletic, but he's the best shooter we have, and he plays his hardest when he's out there, and if that's good enough for McDermott, it's good enough for me.

Why? Have you seen him play? What is the basis for this opinion?

He is 150 pounds best. He needs more meat on the bones. Make a redshirt year of it.

    Re: Wes Eikmeier articles

Frankly I would like them to put the best players on the floor. Most of us probably have watched that game of Vincent vs. Romulus, and I can't hardly imagine Buckley being that much better than Eikmeier. None of us have seen them play real games, and they still have two more years to grow into their bodies before Big 12 play. I hope our program gets to the point where we can bring in some guys and not have to play every guy on the roster every year. Wouldn't it be nice to have 6 guards and 7 big guys and be able to develop them behind some established players? Couldn't this be what McD is possibly doing?

To the contrary Bryce. I have seen a number of the ISU prospects play. Three days ago, I saw Tyler Zeller play at the "Roundball Rumble" in Valparaiso, Indiana. I have seen Garrett play three times, Buckley once, and Staiger once. I was at the Vincent-Romulus game at the McGuire Center in Milwaukee. I have not seen Eikmeier but my son was at his game Wednesday night. Without having seen him play, I can only say that if he is anywhere near as good as Garrett, Buckley, or Staiger, he will be a real plus for the program. Garrett plays for the #1 high school team in Wisconsin, is the best player on the team, and is the top guard prospect in the state of Wisconsin (Sorry Korie Lucious but Diante outplayed you head-to-head). Buckley plays for one of the top teams in the Detroit area and is one of the top-ranked 2008 guard prospects in the state of Michigan. There is a BIG difference in the competition that Garrett and Buckley face every week vs. what Eik faces. Vincent HS plays some of the top teams in the nation. I wonder who Freemont Bergan's toughest opponent will be this year. Maybe Eik will be a great player for ISU, but I have seen many players with unbelievable high school stats fail at the D1 level and end up at D3 schools because they never played against any real competition in high school. I hope that won't be the case with Eik. Sometimes, guys come from small schools and excel at the D1 level, but the odds aren't very good. At any rate, you've gotta love a guy with a great name like Eikmeier.

    Re: Wes Eikmeier articles

I agree with everything you said, PsychedClone. But I have heard that Eikmeier is the real deal. He plays for the best Nebraska AAU team. I heard a report about one of their games in which Eikmeier went head-to-head against some stud player who was going to KU, and he outplayed the guy. He's apparently a great shooter, even against the tougher AAU competition. He was also invited to the elite camp at ISU, and I think that's where he impressed the staff enough that they decided to offer him a scholarship. This is all sounds fairly promising. Also, he's supposed to be an oustanding student, which is great to have on the team.
