    Importance of in state recruiting

ISU did relatively well for coming off a 10 game losing streak and suffering its second coaching change in less then three years, still ISU lost the recruiting battle to EIU because we failed to recruit in state.

I'm not intending for this to become a in-state rival debate, I'm simply using Iowa as an example of why it's important to recruit the state of Iowa first, and everywhere else second.

    From Rivals for in-state recruits:

    School___Class Rank___Recruits____4*___3*
    EIU________61_________8 ________2____3
    ISU________72_________3 ________0____1

Without in-state recruiting, EIU would only have 2- 3* recruits this season. Though it's good to not have to rely on in-state recruits, obviously, ISU can benefit from recruiting the state. I can only believe and hope that Rhoads, being an Iowa native, will continue to improve in this area.

Iowa signed 1 kid from Florida.

ISU signed a bunch from Texas/Florida/California.

Iowa State just needs to **** pound Iowa next year and every year and end this discussion about who is better.

What conference would you rather play in? Its a No Brainer.

Although I'm not sure you can place it at a 1st or 2nd level, but I would agree wholeheartedly that it is very important to recruit the state of Iowa as these kids are getting better and better every year.

In fact if you only look at it in a strategic sense, if it is easy for Iowa to sign all or most of them then it is also easier for them to focus out of state more. ISU to some degree will always be in an uphill battle in state, but they have to try. Danny Mac used to win some of them and that at least evened the playing field a little. Plus it made Iowa commit more resources towards the in-state kids.

Re: Importance of in state recruiting

PR has been quoted as saying he will put more emphasis on in state recruiting.
It is an uphill battle though. Many kids and their parents grew up Hawk fans.
ISU has been competitive with Iowa for 10 years now, so that will start to diminish I think. If we keep beating them regularly, and have winning seasons it will pay off.
Given the smaller pool of D1 football players in the state ISU has to pick their battles. It will always be tough to get Hawkeye fans to commit to ISU, but getting the guys who are toss ups will be the difference in the future.

Not to mention, there are about 50 other D1 schools that have the pick of the litter in Texas and Florida before ISU even has a sniff.

A solid mix of both Iowa kids and Texas/Florida kids is a must for this program to excel.

Recruiting in state is very important. Provided said state is Texas, Florida, or California...

Re: Importance of in state recruiting

For those that would whether recruit from Texas and Florida, think about this:

1st) though we have to battle with Iowa, it is actually easier to talk an in-state recruit into coming to ISU, then it is to talk to a Florida recruit into coming to ISU- which gives the recruiters more time to focus on other players.

2nd) it cost less to recruit in-state. First, you have less travel expenses; second, it cost less for the scholarships.

If you have an Iowa recruit and a Florida recruit that are basically the same, why not recruit from Iowa? I'm not talking about settling for in-state recruits, I'm talking about benefiting from in-state recruits.

Great point and one that gets over looked. Iowa fans are regularly saying as much and I often wonder if it's not because they are rationalizing or justifying. It's not like you cruise into Texas and Florida and grab whomever you want. Iowa has had many kids from Texas and Florida and several have worked out and several have left early or not panned out at all. Just like everywhere it is a crap shoot. Putting your hand in many recruiting baskets is best. Iowa has 24 NFL alumni all mixed up from Iowa,Illinois, Texas, Ohio, Pa, Jersey, Florida et al. Recruiting in state is very important. If it wasn't other sates wouldn't come here and they do. Nebbie, CU and K-St all if I'm not mistaken have NFL alumni who came from Iowa. Anyone who says differently is making excuses because they fear they can't IMO.

Some 2010 in-state guys Rhoads can compete with Iowa for this year.

These two are from east side of state and both Rivals 2010 top 250 guys.

Also the kid from Harlan, and Ames, I can't find their profiles right now.
