    Kia sportage-anyone have one?

I was looking at a 99 sportage on craigslist for my daughter. Does anyone have one? Know anything about them?

Here is an Edmunds review of the 1996. Note the consumer reviews in the upper right corner. I'd read those.

Never saw that coming. I have a good friend that bought a brand new Kia Optama(AP) and he just raves about how nice it is. Of course it is only 6 months old.

But I own a Ford - why would I joke about them?

I would really stay away for KIA. The older ones have nothing but problems. IIRC, their crash test scores are very low. I wouldn't drive one myself, let alone put a loved one in one, IMO.

Kia is one of the most unreliable brands made but if you can get it cheap enough and if it has low miles, it may be worth it.

    Re: Kia sportage-anyone have one?

A friend of ours had a 2001 and it was horrible. She had major problems with it and it felt like it was going to fall a part all the time. I've heard the newer ones are better, but I've never driven them.

I had an older Saturn as a kid. It ran forever and wasn't horrible priced.

The newer Kia Sportages actually have some of the best reliability and safety ratings for their class.

But the 1999 probably doesn't. This wasn't a good time for the Korean automakers.

    Re: Kia sportage-anyone have one?

Ok, car salesman here and don't look for any apologies for that fact. Sir, you are asking about an 11 year old Kia with how many miles on it? Take if for a drive on a rough road with plenty of turns, spend some time going over the vehicles service records, check it out on CarFax, and take it to a qualified technicial for a comprehensive inspection. And, if it is a $2,000 vehicle all the above might not be worth the bother. The best advice I give you is to go out and buy the Consumer Report's automobile edition and use it when car shopping for yourself and your children.
