    Utility Rates in Ames?

I'm apartment shopping with my roommate and we've found some places that include all utilities, some include some utilities, and a few (duplexes) include none. Wondering what your typical electric/water/sewer/heat expenses are per month, if you don't mind sharing? Looking for a total for each item (not per person) and how many people are in your home/apartment.

We're trying to get an idea of a budget for next year and our leading place is a duplex, so we'll be paying electric, heat, water, etc.

ps--Ames only ...also, do the rates change much year to year? And I've heard that the electricity rate in Ames, over the summer, is a flat rate but all other months it depends on your usage. Any truth to that?

Thanks in advance to all who reply........

    Re: Utility Rates in Ames?

3 bedroom apartment, last electric bill was a hair over $30.

Now, we have some friends that live in Legacy that had a bill over $370 for last month for 4 people.

So it seems it can vary.

Yeah....my friends in Legacy have crazy bills. Probably because it's pretty much a fiberglass building, walls are paper thin, and they've got some huge windows! People I know in Chamberlain Lofts and Cyclone Plaza (off the top of my head) have the same problem--they've got these massive windows, which are nice and cool for looking out and making the place look nice, but make heating/cooling cheaply a pain!

    Re: Utility Rates in Ames?

I'm out of town for the weekend and don't have the bills to look at, but I can give you some idea of what we pay.

I live with 3 other guys in a 4 bedroom, about 1200 square feet. The Ames (water, electric, sewer) bill is about $100 a month, give or take $10. Alliant (gas) is somewhere around $40 most months.

We have a pretty normal use case for a college apartment. 4 or 5 laptops plugged in all the time, power sucking tv on most of the night, and we're all out in the living room most of the time (lights rarely on anywhere else). We keep it around 76-78 in warm months and 68 in the winter.

    Hope that helps.
