Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

I've also heard that the fact that a doctor allowed eight to be implanted at a time amounts to medical malpractice. Typically, there are no more than two.

She wants 12 kids but doesn't want to be married. Interesting...

Gotta wonder about the quality of life for those 12 kids...

It actually depends on the situation. If you're young (35 and under), healthy, and have high-grade embryos, they usually only transfer two. If you have poor embryos, physical problems like cysts in the uterus, or are older, they can transfer up to four or five (with three being common). You can check the CDC's website for an IVF clinic's average number of embryos transferred per cycle. Eight is still a really bad idea.

Additionally, almost all reproductive endocrinologists will warn you that selective reduction is a practice that they insist upon. Mid-Iowa Fertility, for example, makes a huge point of this since the McCaughey (sp???) septuplets were born. There's no way that this woman could financially support all of these children on her own - especially since (again) all RE's will warn you that the risk of birth defects doubles with each multiple you carry. These kids are unlikely to be healthy.

I'm guessing she looked at the cost of IVF per cycle (nationwide, it runs about $15,000 to $20,000 per cycle), combined with the cost it would have taken her to freeze her embryos (hundreds per year in some places), and just decided to do it all in one shot. Not a smart idea.

Re: All of Octuplet Mom's kids were In Vitro

She holds a degree in child and adolescent development? She is getting a Masters in counseling? And she thinks she was a good idea?

Poor. Beyond poor. Ridiculous, and for so many reasons. It could have killed her. It could have killed her children. It will most certainly lower the quality of life for each of them. Tax dollars are being wasted. And worst of all this is the sort of behavior that will run the earth into the ground one of these decades. As the rest of the world tries to curb rampant population growth, wackos like this upset the balance just because they're "obsessed with having kids".

She already had 6 kids. Why the need for more? I would be happy with one.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

Re: All of Octuplet Mom's kids were In Vitro

In reference to the comments about tax dollars - I agree. California is one of the few states that mandate coverage of assisted reproductive technology. She used that coverage once for the 6 kids, went bankrupt, abandoned a house, and then used that coverage again. She now is going to use up MILLIONS in insurance and tax dollars on these kids.

What is sad about this is that the insurance companies and states that don't mandate coverage are going to look at this woman and the gross expenses for these children, and continue to elect not to cover ART for people who really need it. Hundreds of thousands will continue to go childless because some nutcase is having 14 kids that way.

As would I. That's why this is offensive - she's milking the system and using an important technology when she doesn't need to do so. It makes everyone else who uses ART look bad by proxy.

My first question as well when I first saw this yesterday. Irresponsible.
