    Marching bands on network TV

I've watched four bowl games today, and every single one of them has shown a decent portion of both schools' marching band performances. I have never, ever seen that even once before. Even my dad was shocked- he's constantly complaining that the people in the stadium at football games get entertained more than the TV audiences, and he said even he hasn't seen that for more than 2 decades. The camera choices need some work, but I was pleasantly surprised to see this happen over and over. I hope it's the beginning of a shift that becomes widespread in football broadcasts.

I don't really have any speculation why they're doing it other than that the networks have hopefully realized that a band is more entertaining than three guys saying "You just gotta play better. That's the best way to win!" for half an hour.

    Opinions?

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

Re: Marching bands on network TV

I love the fact that they're starting to show the marching band performances for these larger bowl games. It's a nice change of pace from the bland halftime shows that ESPN/FOX/etc. usually put on displaying all the highlights we've already seen earlier in the day.

Hopefully this will start to carry over into the regular season games, too.

I always thought that was mainly ABC doing that. I have seen several years of the BCS Bowls with good coverage of the bands but those are also the bowls that are covered by ABC.

I agree this is a good thing to see, it is good to be a little entertained then told over and over again what the teams need to do to win the game, the obvious thing to do is score points!

Fox, CBS and NBC all did it today, too. Actually, Fox did the best job of using their cameras and had the bands on the air the longest. No matter what, I'm happy to see them at all for right now.

Come to think of it, we've been seeing tons more cuts of the bands in the stands during the game than we have in the past.

Prolly because it was so damn funny to see the deer-in-the-headlights look that those band chicks from OU had the entire first half. They looked like someone just told them they'd shot their dog. Classic. Great to not have to hear that damn Boomer Sooner song every other play.

Re: Marching bands on network TV

I totally agree. It's great to see more of the bands. With several hours of college gameday before and after the games for the day, in game highlights, and constant score tickers, there just isn't much covered in the halftime show that is worth while to me. I've been watching games all day, I saw what happened.

There are a lot of great bands out there, and they are all different in some way or another. You don't get to see very many if you just make it to the Trice a few times a season. Much better entertainment than hearing some has-been tell me that for so and so to win they need to tackle better and establish the running game. Almost every game I watch when halftime rolls around I start wondering if it must be obvious day at camp stupid.
