ISU Kudos from St. Paul Pioneer Press

I can't find a link to an online version, but in today's Pioneer Press, they are speculating about finding a replacement for Mason. They started out the article saying that they should "look to our neighbors to the south" to make a high profile hire in a program that is not exactly high profile. They gave great praise to Pollard for nabbing Chizik.

Nice to get noticed! I'm looking forward to our influence spreading even farther!

I'd love to have Mac up here to follow him, but I think they are aiming higher. (That's no shot at Mac; they mention Tony Dungy as a candidate in the article.)

Tony Dungy?? Wow they are aiming high... I think the whole Minnesota Athletic Dept has a perception problem. Remember when they canned the bball coach and McD was a canidate? Good Luck to them in the search though!

Yeah, in fairness to them, though, they did label Dungy as a "dream candidate" and referenced the fact that he played and coached at the U.

OK, "dream canidate" makes much more sense!

Re: ISU Kudos from St. Paul Pioneer Press

UofM AD Maturi seems to be the opposite of our ADJP. He seemed to be asleep at the wheel as Gopher basketball has nearly completley dried up and Monson finally quit. He gives a vote of confidence in the form of a new 5 year contract to Mason one year before firing him. Now I believe the U owes Mason a $3 Million parting gift. To his credit on Jan 1, they would have owed him another mil.

What a sorry state the Goophs are in. And how glad I am as an ISU alum to have all our s*** together well before the holidays. Nice work Jamie.

Maybe BVD should head up here to the cities for some consulting work and raise the talent in the AD by 1% point.

I agree. Seems that there is no plan for replacing Monson, and the Mason thing seems to make little sense. Pollard, in the last two hires, has seemed to have a great game plan and plans A, B, and C. (maybe more)

Re: ISU Kudos from St. Paul Pioneer Press

No way. Could we stop the MAC should be rehired train. He simply is not worthy based on a pathetic overall record. I'll even give him the customary 3-4 year pass that everyone so gratiously allows. If Pollard was here earlier, he would have canned DMAC long ago. The coaching circle knows better. If DMAC was such a hot coach, he would have had interviews long ago. The only reason we want another D-1 school to hire Mac is because he was such a good guy and a hard working employee. I don't think he is successful D-1 coaching material. I think Wayne Morgan and DMAC are career assistants.

Re: ISU Kudos from St. Paul Pioneer Press

I've been told Maturi will hire the same search firm that Iowa State used to hire both GMac and Chizik. Maturi and Pollard are good friends. ISU's bold moves gave Maturi the incentive to get things moving. (And the names that were floated have nothing to do with the search firm..only newspaper guesses)

It's nice to see that the pioneer press thinks we have things going well here. They want GMac, and now want a big hire like GC. Copy ISU seems to be their plan.
