    Toughness-A coach's dream!

Go to ESPN.com, click on college basketball, then click on the Bilas article about toughness underneath the main picture.

This is something almost every team lacks. I am not a Duke fan, but they got it and their assistants and point guards always have it. ie. wojo.

    Re: Toughness-A coach's dream!

Duke strikes me as one of the least tough teams in the country, honestly.

White guys from white suburbs flopping all over the court doesn't scream "toughness," to me.

edit to add video: LOOK AT THAT TOUGHNESS!!!

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0upQDkY-pg"]YouTube - dook's (duke's) Greg Paulus flops (better quality)[/ame]

ummm.... really? I agree they might not be the most physical team out there, but they are tough. They play teams that are out to get them week in and week out and they, for lack of a better phrase, "bring it" everytime

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

Why wouldn't this statement apply to any top 10 team?

In my opinion, I think Pitt looks like one of the toughest teams in the nation this year. On that note, the whole Big East seems pretty tough to me, including Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, UConn, West Virginia, Georgetown, etc.

I'd call OU tough. And Michigan State. And Minnesota. Kansas and Missouri are getting there. Purdue is pretty tough. I don't see much toughness out West at all. Maybe Washington. But really, there's not much toughness West of the Big 12.

    And definitely not Duke.

So how does a team that is ranked in the top 10 just about every year not tough? When they beat a team like Pitt who is "tougher" than them... are they still weak?

I think you're confusing "good" and "tough." This is oversimplified, but being very good is a combination of having a lot of skill and a lot of toughness (see, e.g., KU and Memphis last year) Duke is good, obviously, but they are more skilled than tough. But I think you can kind of pin teams on a sort of continuum, from teams like Duke and Carolina (very skilled, but not as tough) to teams like Pitt and West Virginia (not as skilled, but very tough).

I'm bored, so I'm going to edit this post with a graph which should illustrate what I'm trying to say.

edit: Here's kind of what I'm getting at - obviously very rough - but just an illustration:

    Re: Toughness-A coach's dream!

Here's a thought on tough. Duke is down 11 at Wake Forrest late in the second half, and come back to tie the game with 10 seconds left. (Instead of blowing a 10 pt lead) And WF did not blow it's lead, Duke just out toughed them. BTW, WF scored with a half second left and won the game. When you see a player or a team make several 3s in the last minute, they're tough. Their legs are tired, etc, but they have the mental toughness to keep on.

    Re: Toughness-A coach's dream!

As much as I hate to say it....Duke is a tough team. But to answer the question of what first comes to mind to as a tough team, I would say Pitt would be the first that comes to mind. UCLA also comes to mind....which is no surprise being the coaches for those two programs are thick as thiefs. I really enjoy watching Pitt play....I think Jamie Dixon is one of the most underrated coaches out there.

Did you guys see the toughest team in the country get rocked by 30 last night?

I just printed and framed this thread for its hilarity.

    Re: Toughness-A coach's dream!

Toughest team in America with another tough outing tonight.

They've now lost 4 of their last 6 games.

Some of you guys really need to re-think your position on this.
