Minnesota has a pretty decent recruiting class..opportunity for Cyclones?

With Glenn Mason fired at the University of Minnesota, all of the recruits, even those signed are free to go where they want. Maybe there is some opportunity for Iowa State from that group. There are a lot of us Iowa Staters in Minnesota that would love to see some of that group at ISU.
here is the link to their recruits(free service link)

At this point, I'm guessing that the coaching staff is going to look at all angles, and this could be one of them. From what I can tell, ISU was on the list of three of those kids. By the way, Wesley, I've been trying to figure out...... what the heck is eches?

Mason was 123-121 and in seven bowls in 10 years at Minnesota. I'd say his record was a lot better than McCarney. They will pay him a buyout of $3.5 mil.

Glen Mason did a great job at Minnesota, which is one of the worst places to recruit to, in the Big Ten.

Too cold, early snowfall(usually), absolutely NO tradition in football, have to play 2nd fiddle to the Vikings. I think that with all the negatives, how did Glen Mason ever go to seven bowls in ten years.

I agree with you CyBobbie...Minnesota will not out recruit Mich, Ohio S. Iowa, Penn State and now a rising Indiana. It will be tough to get a better record than Mason. He was 10-3 a couple of years ago, seven wins last year and a bowl this year. We would have kept him at Iowa State.

The gophers DO have tradition, but it was before most of us were born, and not too co-incidentally, before the Vikings came to town. It's tough to compete with a pro team in that small a market.

I would like to see us benefit from a shakeup like this for a change! Maybe Gene can cherry pick the good ones.

How did they manage to play 244 games in 10 years? (24.4/year!)

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

The record posted is incorrect. He was 64-57 overall at Minnesota. The 7 bowls in 10 years is correct though.

They have won the national championship six times with the last one coming in 1960.

I am a little confused how can a metro area of 3 mil people be considered a small market?

It would be great if we could pick up a few of the recruits from minn though.

Thanks for the correction on Mason's wins .I took the Startribune as accurate, but they don't add up. My apologies .

Re: Minnesota has a pretty decent recruiting class..opportunity for Cyclones?

I hope Chizik & Co. do well recruiting in the Twin Cities. It should be in the top three recruiting markets for ISU and this should be a huge opportunity. The current Fr/So players U of M can't be happy about this...transfer?.

Mason didn't do a bad job...winning record and 7 bowl games. Had 3-4 Bowl record, but unless you are playing for the NC how important is it to win your bowl game? It's nice to be in a bowl because your team gets to extend the season another month, mometum for next year, visibility for recruiting, etc... Bowl games are a reward for having a good season, but now only the bottom 50% of DI teams don't go to a bowl.

It is hard to believe one horrible game cost Mason his job. It is even more difficult to believe it was worth $3.5M to U of M to get rid of him!! Joel Maturi, U of M Athletic Director said, "If we had not lost the way we had lost, we probably wouldn't be here today". Did the assistants have anything to do with the second half cratering? Adjustments in 2nd half? Six National Championships, the last one in 1960. U of M football hasn't been the same since they closed the on-campus stadium and they started playing in the Metrodome. ISU is a better choice for Minnesota HS kids.

Agreed, its not the size of the market or pro teams that are a problem at all, the market is a potential strength that is currently untapped. The problem is like Iowa, it is a poor recruiting area, and the other big ten schools have a lot more going for them. You just need someone that can really bring in a lot of talent from outside the area. Look at the success that UW has had in Seattle, it is a similar situation. It can be done, but you need to have some success against the big boys to gain support and bring in top recruits, which is easier said than done.
