Cyclones getting sick of their own excuses

Ames Tribune > Ames Tribune > Sports

Pretty good article. Players very critical of the ways they have been handling games, and rightfully so.

Sounds like part of the problem is pinpointed, lets hope they do something about it.

Bryan is saying a lot of what I'd want to hear. The one thing anyone can control is their own attitude, and he's preaching that to the team right now.

I hope he gets through. There's still time for a decent finish.

Nothing we can do right now about our lack of athleticism, or lack of physical strength...

But what has disappointed me the most (what Petersen is echoing) is the complete lack of mental toughness...I like our team a lot. I like our coaches a lot...but we need to grow a pair and play tough out there instead of repeatedely making careless, and tentative mistakes...and if the careless mistakes continue, somebody (McDermott) needs to light a stinking fire into somebody.

No excuse for losses to South Dakota State, Hawaii, and Colorado what-so-ever...it just shows a complete lack of mental toughness.

Might as well throw Drake in there. We had that one. And the 2nd half with Iowa, because that's a winnable game.

Basically, every loss has that aspect to it this year. When we develop that toughness, we start winning these games.

Great job, Petey. Somebody needs to step up and start leading on the floor. It's not just going to "happen".

Re: Cyclones getting sick of their own excuses

That article tells me that the players are thinking too much. They can't "think" during the game, they have to "know".

If the players need help switching from "think" to "know", the coaches need to "know" first. The coaches need to tell the players that they know they can do it. Don't tell the players that they could have or should have; tell them "I know you will do it the next time".

We fans have to "know" that the players can get distracted worrying about our support. Hilton Magic is a verb not a noun in my book. Fans don't have to swill down cardinal and gold kool-aid but neither should they make up derogatory names for our players. Be a fanatic not just an athletic supporter.

    you are right. Henry Ford

Re: Cyclones getting sick of their own excuses

Unfortunately, there's only one part of these quotes that I agree with and it helps explain how Craig Brackins can score 42 points and 24 points and ISU still gets beat:

“We have to understand if there’s only one guy scoring baskets, then the ball needs to go to him every possession,” McDermott said. “We don’t shoot it until he touches it. I guess we can’t figure that out.”

“If that’s what’s going to win the game, that’s what you’ve got to do,” Petersen said. “Obviously he got it going and they didn’t have a guy who could stop him, so why wouldn’t you throw the ball in to Craig? I guess sometimes that might get some other guys out of the flow on offense a little bit, but we can’t make that an excuse. We’ve got to throw it in to him when he’s scoring 60 or 70 percent of the time.”

I'm usually behind Coach McD 100%, but these quotes have me concerned. Is he so desperate to keep Brackins happy that he's lost sight of the detrimental impact it's had on the team? Let's not forget that ISU had 15 turnovers against CU and at least half of them were either the result of poor passes into Brackins or double-teams on Brackins. You can't just keep doing the same thing over and over again.
