Computer Help Needed Major problem today

The electric company today shut off power to our building at 10:00 am in the morning to do work in the whole area of apartment buildings. When the power came back on my cpu unit will not turn on or have any power to it anymore. Everything else plugged in to the power strip works. Does anyone know how to fix it or what to do? I really dont want to get a new computer. Any help would be appreciated

Turn the power switch (power supply) on the back of the computer off and back on and try again. If that doesn't work, you may need a new power supply.

Try unplugging it overnight. Sometimes that is enough to allow it to recover from a surge.

Try a power supply reset by unplugging the power cord, then press the power button in and hold for 10 seconds. Reattach the power cord and try to power on the computer.

Does anybody know where I could go about getting a new power source and a power cord for a Dell CPU?

Re: Computer Help Needed Major problem today

On a semi related note: Over the past 2 days my computer has been having internet connection issues, every 20-30 minutes or so it will cut out for a few seconds. While this is not a huge issue for internet surfer it is somewhat more annoying for IM as well as the few online games I play(WoW, Trem). I've tried resetting the internet, restarting the computer. Running my virus scans, disabling my firewall, but none of these have solved the problem. Anything else I can do on my end that would help fix the problem or is it more likely an issue with Wartburg internet as a whole?

Any local computer place should be able to help you out. You don't need a Dell specific power supply. You should be able to get a good 400 watt PS for around $50. If you don't mind waiting, newegg is a good option.

You may want to have someone that knows what they are doing help you out. It takes about 10-15 minutes to swap one out if you know what you're doing.

Thanks for the help, im going to best buy in an hour when it opens and hoping the power supply cord will work. Then if that doesnt work i will get the power supply for the cpu. $50 isnt that bad considering a new cpu will cost alot more

I'm pretty sure it won't be the cord.

Not true. Most Dells have proprietary power supplies. They will not accept ATX PS's that you will find on newegg, because the plug ins are in different locations.

I thought that was true for older dells, but the newer ones used standard ATX.

This is possible. I just know that whenever someone comes in to my desk with a Dell power supply, it hasn't matched. I think it depends on the model.
