    Question about Buckley

This question is not intended as criticism of Buckley, nor do I want an answer from some high school kid out in Podunk Center or some "expert" in California or North Carolina. How would you compare Buckley's play/progress with where Garrett was 1 year ago? Garrett was playing more minutes then than Buckley is now. Why? Is it because all Garrett had to do was beat out 3 walkons while Buckley has to compete with 3 walkons, an acclaimed frosh, and 3 sophs who have been in the program a year longer? What I was hoping for in Oct. and eventually want to happen, Buckley will start taking more minutes from Garrett. kgcyclone? Knownothing?

    Re: Question about Buckley

He sometimes tries to do too much and puts himself in bad positions. DG is longer so he's a harder matchup as well, and probably a better rebounder due to being 4" taller (this might be generous for Buckley). I think another concern is him understanding the offense.

    Re: Question about Buckley

Diante definitely did not have to beat out a point guard who had already played the position for our coach, while Buckley has Diante in front of him.

I'd like to see hime get a few minutes, but, as already stated, he does get himself in bad positions with his aggressiveness. He'll be all right, I think.

Plus, we're not in a position this year that a freshman PG has to have a lot of playing time, whereas we definitely were last year.

I'm just a couch "expert" in Ames, though. Take it for what it's worth.

    Re: Question about Buckley

I think you've hit on the reason. DG played last year because he had to...that's all we had. I would guess that Buckley would perform about how DG did last year if he were in there all the time.

I had higher hopes for his progress, too. From the comments Mac made after he signed, I thought he'd be getting more minutes. He said he would "help us right away". That's not the case yet. But I'm not exactly worried, either, as he plays the toughest position to adjust to from HS play. I think he has the attitude/work ethic to improve himself.

Disclaimer: I live in Minnesota. I hope that's OK.

    Re: Question about Buckley

In Mac's offense it is very difficult to beat out experience...Just look at Petey...Petey is not the most athletic player. A lot of people including myself would like to see more Buckley, but the fact is he is not ready "yet". DG was forced to play....Buckley was not.

    Re: Question about Buckley

I wonder why coaches recruit a player like Buckley when they already have a point guard who is a freshman...

Doesnt make a whole lotof sense to me...but alot of things that gmac does, makes no sense!!!!

I think what people don't realize is how important having a capable backup point guard is. Things can easily fall apart if the starting PG goes to the bench, and no one can get the team into the offense.

I just hope whoever is the backup is comfortable with that. It seems like these days, no one accepts that role with much comfort.

That's right. Injuries, academic elegibility, family issues never happen at Iowa State.

No kidding. How do you build bench depth or the next wave of players if you don't keep recruiting, even at positions where you have players?

I understand that it's hard to get one when the guy ahead of them might start for their first 3 years here, but you have to do it.

What if that guy gets hurt? Drops out of school? Flunks out of school? Some other terrible outcome? If you haven't recruited the next guy, you've got no point guard (or whatever other position we could discuss). That's putting the program in a terrible position, and makes no sense.
