    Weekend Recruiting Harvest Roundup--Thus Far

    Five new commits...

Mims and Woods from Palmdale, both CB's hometown and where Hayworth Hicks went to HS. Woods is a DT, Mims listed as an "athlete".

    Walter Woods - Football Recruiting

Jennert, a bigger WR who may or may not become an H-Back. Previously committed to Florida Atlantic.
    Donnie Jennert - Football Recruiting
    Scout.com: Donnie Jennert Profile

Jansen Watson, a smallish safety/corner with good quicks, who was committed to Colorado State. We needed another safety.

And Willie Scott, a LB/TE who could help either place (I'd lean towards LB, but with two upperclassmen at TE, you never know).

Seems to me a case of CPR taking the best athletes possible on short notice, and will sort it all out later. I like that philosphy.

And yes, it appears that the fans at the KU game did their job.

Re: Weekend Recruiting Harvest Roundup--Thus Far

I think your post brings up an interesting chicken/egg debate. Obviously ISU needs bodies at this point, and Coach Rhoads is intent of getting those bodies. However, ISU also needs talent which isn't going to happen in excess with this year's class this late in the game.

So what's the better plan? To reach a little this year to get bodies in and hope to develop them or to hold back this year in hopes that your message resonates with a higher caliber talent next year?

I'd say right now the DT commit has me excited. The rest of this weekend's haul so far is not real impressive.

the WR looks like a bigger, faster Blythe. Put on some more weight and this is the play making, athletic TE that we have not seen. Another thing, you never know what doors these FL recruits might open for us in the future.

Re: Weekend Recruiting Harvest Roundup--Thus Far

I would rate my excited for them as follows

    Mims
    Woods
    Watson
    Jennert
    Scott

I think Mims is a sleeper, but you have to be concerned w/ the fact that nobody was going after him and that there was an article stating how he might need to go JUCO to get more interest

I like Woods if he can keep his speed when moving to DT

Jennert is intriguing and I am hoping we put 40 lbs on him and make him a TE

When he's taking commits from Florida Atlantic and Colorado State, you get the impression he's not exactly skimming the cream.

So what's the better plan? To reach a little this year to get bodies in and hope to develop them or to hold back this year in hopes that your message resonates with a higher caliber talent next year?
I was going to say "hold back" (largely because I expect the offense to put on a real show next fall), but is a kid who redhsirts this year going to be as good as a more highly rated true freshman in 2010? And no matter how you squeeze it, CPR will only be able to give out so many schollies next year (25, plus whatever of this year's leftovers next January). I'm hoping there will be guys fighting for those slots.

I'd say right now the DT commit has me excited. The rest of this weekend's haul so far is not real impressive.
The thing that I like is that despite certain questions, there's not really a case (so far) that I can really question their quickness or athleticism--and there have been some real head scratchers in the past. All seem to have some attribute that might well allow them to succeed. So some (or most) might be projects--it's better than signing someone with no upside.

I suspect it will be a while before he contributes, as it appears he needs to hit the weight room. His profile lists his bench max at 245. There were plenty of guys at my highschool, which played 8 man, that did more than that, and I got close and only weighed 165 lbs.

Bottomline is non of us know how these guys play, or what their potential is. Only coaches who have watched them play and studied film know. With a new coach of course we have to roll the dice on some players. Some will pan out and some won't.

I'm just relieved that on an incredibly frigid recruiting weekend, we could get commitments.

I hope we can still sign Taylor Martin and Akeem Spence. Our defense will only go as far as our DL allows us to.

We got Taylor Martin. Where else would he go? We are the only school to go after him

How can you say the rest of this weekend's haul so far is not real impressive? Have you seen all of these players perform or watched film on them. Most of the scouting services that rate these players have never seen them play. The number of stars they put behind a players name is based on who is recruiting them. I trust Coach Rhoads this is his area of expertise.

Same here and some of these guys pass the 'eye' test. Not to mention, but if we are beating D-1 schools to obtain their services, then I am relatively comfortable with the evaluation process. I get a little nervous when we are competing with St. Cloud State for our recruits.

Just becasue a scouting service has them listed at 1 position that don't mean that 's where they will end up. This late you get bodies especially if they can run and find spots for them later.
