I don't think this is as big of deal as everyone on this site are making it out to be. He is a defensive minded coach, he will put in his philosophies into what ever system they implement, he can sell that all himself.

    Re: From Rhodes Himself

I don't know how not getting a DC in place can be considered "no big deal". I know that we has to focus on recuiting, but wouldn't most kids want to know not only what style of defense we are going to run, but who will be runing it? Filling out the staff could only help recuiting as that gives us more guys to beat the bushes for talent.

    Re: From Rhodes Himself

Who is this "Rhodes" guy you here speak of??? I shook a man's hand today in CA with the last name of Rhoads who took the time to shake and thank all the students today when he walked up through CA. Has a very strong handshake!

They spelled his name correctly in the article, but you mis-spelled it your thread title...I know spelling police sorry

I wonder if it is someone in the NFL still coaching, especially from Arizona. Who would have dreamed they were headed to the Super Bowl? Wasn't Ron Aiken the name a couple of weeks ago that was being thrown around?

Rhoads knows what style of defense we will run. He's not going to hire someone to run something different than what he wants.

"Rhoads in no hurry to hire defensive coordinator"

    He's made that very obvious.

He is a defensive mind, he knows what he wants to run, he recruits on that and I do not doubt that he can sell it. He is keyed on recruiting which I do not fault him for. Especially coming in so late on this recruiting year, he has done a lot to get the kids to stay committed that he wants and get other possible defensive recruits to visit.
I would be really impressed if we landed this kid today (Larvez Mars - Football Recruiting).

    Re: From Rhoads Himself

I'd see no problem with Rhoads running the defense himself the first year or two to make sure he gets what he wants, and groom somebody like Ash to take over later. I'm sure he has complete confidence in our o-coordinator and would leave the offense completely to him anyway, allowing Paul to concentrate on the defense. Better than having a hands-off head coach like Chiz who apparently left the d completely with Bolt (at least I assume he did or Chiz can't even coach d).

    Re: From Rhoads Himself

i like this. if the right coach isn't out there, don't make a hire. just don't take a risk with a coach that you don't feel right with. take your time.

    Re: From Rhoads Himself

He does have it right ... recruiting is definitely the most important priority out there right now. I agree that he needs to find the perfect fit for defensive coordinator. I just wish he would get at least one more defensive coach! I will be glad if we get this strength and conditioning stuff over with and hire McKnight. He is the most important hire right now. This is the most important time of the season for strength and conditioning, now and the summer. If we get this guy in, it will be a step in the right direction.

Hi, BugDoc. I'm one fan to whom it's "no big deal." Why? Because Rhoads says it's no big deal.

I assume PR knows what he needs to do, and I assume he will prioritize those needs as he believes necessary. I believe these things because Rhoads is a professional, and because I have no professional standing by which to critique his decisions.

Evidently, Rhoads decided - with six coaches on hand (including himself) - it's a better use of his time to spend it recruiting than to split off a good part of the time available to him vetting coaching candidates and making hires.

Who am I to dispute Rhoads's decision? No one. A peon fan. A nobody. I will judge Rhoads' ISU program by what we see on the field, but I'm in no position to evaluate what is the best use of Coach's time as he sees fit when operating out of public view and going about his daily business.

The clock is ticking. The recruiting deadline approaches, 10 days, 9 days, 8 days. . . . Completing staff hires? It can wait, if Rhoads says it can wait. If the idea is to get the best people, players and coaches, and one group has a deadline attached to it and the other doesn't. . . .

    JMHO.
