Prep football coach charged with murder

A Kentucky high school football coach was criminally charged in the death of Max Gilpin, a 15 year-old offensive lineman at Pleasure Ridge Park high school who died last summer after collapsing at practice. The charge is reckless homicide.

According to the linked article the coach had refused to let the players take water breaks.

I say put the coach in prison.

Re: Prep football coach charged with murder

Doesn't murder require the premediation of killing someone?

Did he refuse to let the players break for water as a way to kill one of them?

    Manslaughter - maybe. Not murder.

This article reminds me of this - The Junction Boys (2002) (TV) - I can't imagine a coach not allowing for the safety of his players when it is that hot out.

Re: Prep football coach charged with murder

I had some coaches like this, that were very strict on pushing athletes etc. But when it's that hot out, they weren't stupid. We took frequent water breaks and let us sit in the shade when we felt dehydrated/dizzy/pale. Exercising in the heat is the 2nd most stressful thing on your heart, right behind losing large amounts of blood in a short period of time. Definitely not something you want to mess around with.

That's first degree murder... I think. 2nd and 3rd degree are of lesser doings.

I don't believe that "murder" is a legal term. The coach was charged with "reckless homicide" which is may be similar to manslaughter?

Sounds like Reckless Homicide is about the same as Involuntary Manslaughter.

First Degree Murder: A premeditated murder, and (in some states) murders involving certain especially dangerous felonies, such as arson or rape, or committed by an inmate serving a life sentence.
Second Degree Murder: Non pre-meditated killing.
Third Degree Murder: Any other murder (e.g. when the intent was not to kill, but to harm the victim)

This should spark a great debate.

Temperatures in the 90s are nothing. What was the humidity?

Re: Prep football coach charged with murder

Murder definitions can vary a lot from state to state. I'm guessing that in Kentucky reckless murder means the accused did something (in this case withhold water) that he knew would likely cause death.

ESPN reported the heat index was 94, and the linked story said temperatures were in the 90s.

So, it was probably one of these:
    (1) 90 and fairly dry
    (2) 80s and humid

Those temperatures are not that unbearable. An average defense lawyer will win this case.

Unbearable or not - the coach should have allowed for water breaks.

He might beat the charges from the state, but the family will win their lawsuit against him and the school disctrict.
