    MBB Perspective

Hey guys. I posted this on CR and wanted to put it here as well.

It really bugs me with the bad rap the Gmac gets from some ISU fans. From 1992-1997 we went to 5-6 NCAA Tourneys and were 5-5 with an appearance in a sweet sixteen in 1997. The following two seasons were arguably just as bad (or worse) as the past two under Gmac.

In 97-98, we finished 5-11 in the conference & lost to Drake, Iowa, UNI, Detroit, TCU & Murray State.

In 98-99 we finished 6-10 in the conference & lost to UNI, Iowa and squeaked out an OT game against W. Ill.

In 06-07 we finished 6-10 in the conference & lost to UNI, Drake, Iowa, Bradley, and squeaked out a 2 pt win against E Ill.

In 07-08 we finished 4-12 in the conference & lost to UNI, Drake, & Bradley.

Point being that after 6 successful seasons, we were handed 2 seasons that could be aruably as bad as the past 2, on a situation that GMac walked into, and we could all agree was mostly out of his control with defections (not completely, some were around 80/20 I think.) Point being for the detractors is to be patient, we have a lot of young talent.

I agree... but you won't find too many who will agree or support that post.

I'm trying to be patient. I agree with just about everything you have said in that post. As I have said before though there can be no more excuses next season. The team needs to perform at an NCAA tournament level in '09-'10.

    Re: MBB Perspective

good points, and I concur. You can't argue with the vocal minority on these boards though, and I would be willing to bet that GMAC has overwhelming support from a vast majority of Cyclone fans. But like everything in life, the disgruntled fans are the most vocal - giving off a false impression that they speak for the majority.

I think this is something that fans, coaches, and recruits should all keep in mind. The views of the vocal minority do not reflect the views of the vast majority of fans.

I agree with your post...mostly. It is what has happened after those 2 bad years that really counts. And, since GMac's first year could be considered a throw-away, next year has to be NCAA worthy (like Bryce said).

There's barely a reason to discuss this any more. Next year is the year. End of discussion.

That's about all the perspective that's needed.

    Re: MBB Perspective

...and McD has had to deal with a situation that rivals the
preverbal "death penalty." Don't have the numbers, but after the Larry E and Morgan fiasco we were down to what?... 3 scholarship players returning. I know someone will reply..."but basketball is different... one or 2 players can turn a team around." Not when you are building from ground zero.

No one likes to be patient. Sucks to always say..."next year" Facts are facts though.

I agree. I would be disappointed if they didn't make the tournament next season. We will have some upperclassman and experience, also should be getting some talent in needed positions.

    Re: MBB Perspective

I agree we should be good by next year, so I think if we have a little patience we will be alright. However, if we don't win next year, something is not working.

I also think your analysis is a little flawed as you cherry picked all the bad years and ignored the successful years that came with them. We all know there will be down years from time to time and those are fine as long as we have our up years also. So lets hope we have one of those by next year.

Fair enough, but I picked those years to show how bad they were coming off of a lot of success. Times when it should have been easier to keep the program rolling. Compared to what GMac inherited, that was a cake walk.

McDermott inherited a team one year removed from an NCAA tournament with two players declared pro and one willing to discuss coming back. That is it. Only one player announced he was going to transfer before McDermott was hired and that was Carr and he even came out and said he would listen to Greg and decide after that. It is very rare for a program to have mass defections when a new coach comes in...

I agree that next year is the put up or shut up year, but if we don't get Barnes and Brackins leaves, we could be back the following year to where we are now...

I see us going backwards instead of getting better. I know the conference season is young and I sure hope that changes, but I'm worried that this trend will continue.

I just don't think Greg has what it takes to recruit and coach in a major conference.

    Please prove me wrong.
