    SI.com: Inside Recruiting

Really good piece about where most athletes come from in BCS schools and how region helps so much... check out the table at the end...

Just saw this. I like how they integrated it with Google Maps. You can look at all Iowa State recruits and recruits by state, etc..

That's really cool! I'm guessing it will be pretty similar next year, except maybe a few more from the Pennsylvania area.

The chart at the end explains the majority of college football's haves and have nots. Imagine what ISU could do if they could get 90% of their recruits within the state or 200 miles. In theory they could take what they save from the recruiting budget and invest in other areas.

Good article. One thing that surprised me was the lack of top 100 players from Illinois and Michigan.

Looking at that percentage table actually surprised me. Technically, Iowa had a lower percentage of recruits from Iowa than Iowa State did. Only a few percentage points off. Kind of illustrates that Iowa still manages to pluck the best Iowa players.

Also, they have 30% of their roster from within 200 miles. Where are they drawing from that isn't 200 miles from Ames too? St. Louis, Chicago?

That's a major point of this article, in both having the best athletes directly around the school, and saving money on recruiting, even when places like FL, UT, etc, have the largest budgets in the nation. It's always going to be an uphill battle at places like ISU.

Iowa does REALLY well in Illinois and specifically Chicago. They have a very good presence, both as a university and as a recruiter for athletics. It always pisses me off when I visit home how many Hawkeye stickers I see, hats I see, etc.

Try South Bend, Indiana. I can't believe the Hawkeye stickers and car decals here.
