    ISU/ Big12 '09 lookahead

    CFN's Big12 early lookahead, I haven't it posted yet:

Why to get excited: Arnaud is a good all-around playmaker, while RB Alexander Robinson and WR Darius Darks are good prospects. Seven starters return on defense, while Leonard Johnson and Devin McDowell are two good kick returners to spark the special teams. As always, the non-conference schedule is light and breezy with North Dakota State, Kent State and Army to go along with the annual showdown against Army, while ISU missed Texas and Oklahoma from the South.

Why to be grouchy: The overall talent level still isn’t there to challenge the big boys in the Big 12. Going on the road to play Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri will all but end any pie-in-the-sky dreams of challenging for the North title. Leading receiver, R.J. Sumrall, is gone along with key defensive backs Chris Singleton and Brandon Hunley need to be replaced.

The number one thing to work on is: Finding one thing defensively the team can do well. The one big issue against the high-octane Big 12 offenses was the inability to take anybody out of their game plans. Rhoads will try to generate a pass rush first and hope the secondary can get a little bit of help. Too many passing games were able to throw the ball at will, and while that was a problem for everyone in the Big 12, it was a bigger issue for the Cyclones.

    Biggest offensive loss:WR R.J. Sumrall
Biggest defensive loss: DE Kurtis Taylor
Best returning offensive player: OG Reggie Stephens, Sr.
Best returning defensive player:FS James Smith, Sr.
    Rest of the Big12

Annual showdown with Army?? No Iowa game next year?

I would also like to "officially" disagree with their best returning offensive and defensive players.

Looks like we will be Big 12 north champs. When can I get my Big 12 championship tickets?

    Re: ISU/ Big12 '09 lookahead

I don't agree with his presumption that Nebraska is the favorite. If you look at what they lost this season, and what they are bringing back, I just don't see how they are going to get that many wins.

Most of the secondary return, a leaky secondary that was last in the Big12 in turnovers; while their strength, the D line, is in shambles. On offense, they lost their star QB, RB, and several WR's from a WR core that isn't that deep. Their line will be good and there is hope for a run game if they can find a back, but I could see Nebraska not get into a bowl this season.

At this point, I think everyone will stay through spring ball at least. The critical months will be April through August.

    Re: ISU/ Big12 '09 lookahead

I do agree with one thing. We need to make a run of some kind this coming year with the schedule we have. Unlike the first poster, though, I think Mizzou and KU, with both losing their QBs who were the heart of the teams, plus Macklin for Missouri, they could be very beatable. And, Mizzou lost their Offensive coordinater. That could be a big loss. As far as the future schedule, it looks rough for sure but you never know. Utah looked awfully good against Alabama, but again, they will be a completely different team without Brian Johnson at QB. ( plus, I saw them look VERY ordinary twice this year). We just need to get some wins, a little confidence and who knows.

Reesing is back for KU. They'll be decent although they take some hits on defense.
