    Berryman

Did anyone catch this? It was posted on profootballtalk.com last night

    ANOTHER TURD FOR THE BENGALS?

Undeterred (or is it undeturd?) by the arrests of eight players this year, the Cincinnati Bengals worked out on Wednesday former Iowa State defensive end Jason Berryman.

Berryman was not selected in the 2006 supplemental draft. He missed the entire 2004 season while serving 258 days in jail for theft and assault convictions.

Though Berryman has not yet been signed, why would the Bengals even sniff around someone with a history of incarceration, given the stream of embarrassments that the franchise has faced this season?

Clearly, coach Marvin Lewis has decided that talent trumps turdishness, and it looks like he'll continue to risk further tarnish to the team's reputation if, in the end, his troubled players might help to deliver a shining silver trophy.

I had not seen this yet.

I really have no idea how I feel about him getting a shot in the NFL.

I wish JB the best. Compared to the laundry list of crimes that Bengals players have been charged with, his past indiscretions are very minor.

Sure, they are minor - yet it doesn't make JB's history any better or lessen the severity of those crimes at all.

    Re: Berryman

He's been punished, quite severely in fact. This is just a reporter looking a little too hard for news. If he pans out for the Bengals, we'll see a complete 180 by this guy.

Besides, we all took him back after his jail sentence. We're understandably bitter that he broke the zero-tolerance policy here, but his underage drinking "crime" is so very minor and he suffered verily by missing what could have been a great senior year. I wish him the best and hope he makes it in the NFL.

    Re: Berryman

Although I don't think Berryman should of ever been allowed in an Iowa State uniform after what he did in 2004, the man served his time for the crime, and he deserves a chance to make a living as an adult. Being caught as a minor in a bar was nothing, in fact, the crime is equal to getting a speeding ticket. However, because of the media attention that story got, and that Berryman was on a zero tollerance policy when he was let back on Iowa State's football team, the coaching staff really had no choice then to let him go.

With the tallent that kid has, I would love to see him playing for the NFL!

Ok, let's talk severity. The cell phone thing was trumped way up, and drinking underage? Come on. Plenty of people do plenty of worse things everyday. In the grand scheme of life, JB isn't what I would call a hardened criminal. Shoot, if drinking underage was a damnable offense, half of our young people would be on the oh the highway to hell.

    Re: Berryman

No one here called him a hardened criminal. Yet he was given a second chance and then yet another second chance after messing up.

After he knew a no-tolerance policy existed, he made his way into a bar.

He served his time, yet show me where JB has displayed he's learned his lesson.

For good or for bad, Jason Berryman will always be tied to Iowa State and I wish him nothing but the absolute best in his NFL career.

There was not one bit of evidance that showed he was drinking underage, in fact I beleive he blew zero when he was given a BAC test that night (I could be wrong). He was caught in a bar as a minor, just because you are in a bar does not mean you have to be drinking. Getting caught in a bar as a minor is a very minor offense (no pun intended), but he did break his zero tollerance policy, and that is why he was let go.

    Re: Berryman

ISUFan22, Are you actually hoping the NFL snubs him on account of his history? Bitter much? :p

All I'm saying is I hope he gets his shot, as long as he's got the talent.

    Re: Berryman

Being a minor in a bar was the easy way to get JB out of the system for more severe violations. I wish him the best as he tries out in the NFL; it was fun sitting next to his buddies down in Houston at the bowl game.
