    ISU youth vs KU youth

There is a group here that seems to think youth isn't an excuse for losing. I agree, it isn't an excuse, but it is a reason.

Let's look at KU's national title team.

    Robinson - SR
    Chalmers - JR
    Rush - JR
    Arthur - SO
    Jackson - Sr

That is a very experienced, talented group. So, even Kansas, who regularly gets McDonalds all-Americans, needs to have experience to succeed. Granted, success at ISU and KU are different things. At ISU NCAA tournament appearances equal success, while at KU national titles are the expectation. Still, the logic is that same when you consider KU is always going to recruit better talent than ISU. That being said, I struggle with the group here who thinks ISU should be winning now when our 3 best players are true sophmores, one of which is in his first year of college ball. Look at our elite 8 year. We had all juniors and seniors on our team then, not to mention Tinsley and Horton were older than normal juniors.

The bottom line is we are very inexerienced. Yes, we have 3 seniors in our top ten, and I am big fans of all 3. But, is there anyone here who thinks Colvin, Gilstrap, and Pomlee aren't a significant upgrade over Petey, Haluska, and AT? If there is, those people are simply wrong.

Our best and most important players are all underclassmen. Next year they will be upperclassmen. Think about the jump Fizer made from his SO to JR season. Look at how much better and stronger DG is this year vs last season. Brackins the same thing. The core players on this team will make big strides from this season to next. Guys like Buckley, Eik, JVB, Ham, and Boozer will all have another year under their belt. Combine these things with a major talent infusion in the form of 'Strap, CC, and LA and we are going to be very good in '09.

Re: ISU youth vs KU youth

I still see youth as an "excuse" next year as people believe we'll depend a fair amount on Colvin and Gilstrap.

And I see DG as stronger, but so far, the jury is out on him being noticeably better.

Completely tired of this excuse - it's gotten very old, valid or not. Just win...somehow.

Yes. However, the more threads, the more valid - supposedly.

If we can get DG to finish in traffic a lot of problems go away in a hurry.

We'll depend on Colvin and Gilstrap...but they'll be alongside enough upperclassmen that youth won't be able to be an excuse.

Exactly. We had some upperclassmen last year and youth was still atop the excuse list.

Re: ISU youth vs KU youth

There is no way we can use Gillstrap as an excuse as to why we are young. He will be a senior next year. Like I said in another thread we are getting over 2/3 of our scoring from 4 guys who are all underclassman. That would be Brackins, Lucca, DG and Hamilton. Whether people want to use the excuse or not we are still young.

Just curious, what year did Gilstrap first start college? I know the staff is doubtfull on the second year because of the clock rule but is there a chance he may not even be eligible for one year?

I don't see many people here saying we are going to depend on Colvin and Strap. The point is that they will be upgrades over our outgoing seniors, who are not really key players on the team.

To say DG isn't better this season is highly inaccurate. I think he could be better than he is right now if he was finishing more at the rim, but he is clearly better this year than last.

I agree though, it is time to start winning. It is getting to be way too long without some tangible success.
