    Re: Johnny Orr

I read a book about Johnny several years ago and one thing I didn't know prior to that was how good an athlete he was. In high school at Taylorville, Ill his team was undefeated state champs in basketball, undefeated in football and very good on baseball.
He had skipped a grade somewhere along the line and enrolled at Illinois when he was 17. I believe he still holds the mark as the youngest player in the Big 10 to letter in both basketball and football.
After one year he entered the service and when he returned he went to Beloit college. He was also a very good basketball player there and played a year or so of pro basketball.

Whoo eee coach, this thread's a dinger!!

I grew up on Johnny, and although I appreciate and support the coaches since, I miss Johnny's persona in ISU athletics.

Never missed a game when I was at college from 86-91. Hilton Magic was loud and alive then. Johnny taking the floor with team the first time each game got so loud I doubt anything glass was safe. Back then, student tickets got shuffled around Hilton so you might have awesome seats for this game but nose bleed seats the next. It didn't matter where our tickets were, every one of them was filled and rarely did you leave the place with your voice in tact. Johnny got people going like nobody I have seen since.

    Re: Johnny Orr

If he had coached in the era of online discussion boards, we'd be here reading complaints about his pitiful road record, how he had a 6'11" guy who wouldn't stay in the paint, but kept going out and shooting 3's, .... You get my point.

    Re: Johnny Orr

Johnny had good and bad points, but one thing about him - he liked people. He would always look strangers in the eye and want to meet them, whether it was at a Cyclone Club function or at the dentist's office.

"There were four good players in this state last year. We got two of them...one of them went to Iowa, and one of them went to a junior college, which is basically the same thing".-Johnny Orr

    Re: Johnny Orr

This thread will eventually degenerate into a well Tim Floyd and Larry Eustachy did more and went further.

Maybe they did, but we would have never attracted coaches like that if Johnny Orr had not built the foundation.

When we hired him our basketball program had the prestige of our current football program. Hiring him was like hiring Roy Williams away from North Carolina today. He brought a lot of excitement to Ames and built the program from scratch and took us to the Tourney..

Whoo Whee Johny...You were a ton of fun!
