Varner went 4-0 in the Cyclone's third-place effort at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He scored bonus points for ISU with a major decision of Indiana's Justin Kuhn, 9-0 and by sticking Brent Chriswell of Boise State in 2:50.

The Bakersfield, Calf. native knocked off the former No. 1-ranked 197-pounder in the country; handling Nebraska's Craig Brester by way of a 10-3 decision.
