    Computer Help!!

My Norton Anti-virus has detected a virus but cant remove it. Need some help on how to remove this thing...the virus is call infostealer.gampass

I've disabled the system restore (thats what the symantic site suggested) but really looking for some insight on how to remove if could help that'd be great.

Thats a good start, now run a full system scan. Should clean most of it up.

Might I recommend also running a free program called Malwarebytes. I seems to do a very good job cleaning alot of this stuff up.

    Re: Computer Help!!

One of the reason it couldn't remove the virus is because it may be running, usually you can go to task manger and locate the .exe file and end it, and then try to delete the file; however some virus are sneaky and as soon as you end the process it starts right back up again...

    Re: Computer Help!!

What anti-virus do you suggest? I've had the same norton system for 4 or 5 years and this is the first virus I've ever had.

    Thanks for the input

I will disagree with this and I am an IT person. I use AVG on my laptop which I hardly ever use but the main PC in my house is running Norton 2009 and over the years has saved my butt from having to reinstall my OS probably. You just have to set it up right so it's not a hog and completely anal with everything you do but once you have it setup just right at least me personally I think it's fine and probably more up to date and effective with virus detection and removal than some of the free ones out there.

Booting into safe mode and running the scans and deleting the files can usually get around that behaviour.

    Re: Computer Help!!

Run spybot and adaware to see what they will find. Norton isnt perfect but its not horrible either. Usually Norton will grab a certain file that it deems to be a problem but not clear out other roots of the file so it will keep reappearing. Try those spyware removal products I mentioned and see what happens.

    Re: Computer Help!!

Downloading more antivirus apps wont help. This is a peice of spyware that has already spread. There are probably registry entries now that antivirus wont pick up. 4429, when you have run the antispyware apps and removed what they find, PM me. Ill walk you through some registry removal steps.
