DM REG latest headline...give me a break

Underdog tag may be Iowa's incentive

First the Register begged the Alamo committie to chose Missouri because it used to be a "great rivalary" and they prayed Colt McCoy would stay hurt and now this one. If I remember, the Hawks were underdogs against Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana and it didn't seem to help. I wonder what has changed? Register PR spin machine at work again!

Re: DM REG latest headline...give me a break

I don't think they were underdogs vs. Indiana, but I could be wrong.

Either way, the DMR will do what it wants - that much is clear.

I started ignoring the perceived bias long ago. It's pointless for me to get worked up about it because it isn't going to change.

That headline is hilarious. It should probably read "Underdog tag may be a result of a 6-6 season with losses to Indiana and Northwestern".

Re: DM REG latest headline...give me a break

What?!? The DMR is biased? You don't say...

I think everyone has a "I knew the Register was biased when...", well here is mine.

They ran an article last year saying that the Iowa Hawkeye basketball attendance was in the top 25 again this year. They sold something like 12,000 tickets per game. Then went on to mention Iowa's past attendance, how they went undefeated at home, had a great season, blah, blah, blah. Then the very last line said this "And Iowa State finished 26th".

We were 1 spot behind Iowa in attendance...they won the Big 10 tourney, had a great season...we sucked *** and had a terribly disappointing season. And we were 1 spot behind Iowa. Nothing said about any of that.

It still pisses me off to this day.

I personally would go with "Iowa pays coach $600,000 per win"

or "Iowa attendance on a downhill slide"

Instead of these, we all know the Register would publish something like:

"Kirk Ferentz saves little children from fires while making a small sum coaching Iowa football"

or "After a slow start, Iowa attendance still better than Drake and UNI combined."

If you would've read the article, Bill Curry of ESPN said the following:

    http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pb...612220391/1003

"There's a tremendous incentive for (Iowa)," Curry said. "And there's nothing (Longhorns coach) Mack Brown can say to his guys that's going to make them believe this is going to be a really hard game."
What's there to argue about the headline? The Register was using the words of an ESPN analyst to describe the scenario leading up to The Alamo Bowl and not "Register PR spin machine" designed to rile up the Iowa St. fanbase.

Texas is coming of a disappointing season (disappointing to the 'Horns and fans) and have serious questions at QB. Over the years, The Alamo Bowl has produced some great upsets: Kansas St losing to Purdue (I think that's who it was) and Nebraska beating Michigan last year. What do these 2 upsets have in common? Neither KSU or Michigan wanted to be there. As is the case with Iowa, last year, Nebraska was double digit under dogs.

i agree with garn91. I'm not arguing the DMR isn't hawk biased, but that headline doesn't really jumpout as biased. They are clearly underdogs I dont think there is any arguing that, and as we all know in the sports world, being the underdog can really motivate the players to prove everyone wrong.

Why do we even care? It's basketball season. Bowl games are exhibitions anyway. If the first couple of bowls represent the entire bowl season, they are all going to be ho-hummers. Wake vs. Louisville in a BCS game?

    Hoop it up!

i also agree with garn91. the rag has had some horribly biased articles in the past, but in reality, this headline is nothing but the truth. the hawks are huge underdogs in this game and i'm sure they are using it for motivation "nobody's giving us a chance" rah rah rah, etc...

If McCoy can play and be reasonably functional the old gold and black, will end up being old black and blue!

I agree with what Tube is saying. Why do some of you guys care so much about Iowa's bowl game? It proves how important Iowa really is to you. Get over the Hawks.
