    Cyclone Wrestling

What do we need to do before nationals to have a chance at beating Iowa? We might only qualify 8 guys and they will have 9 or 10. I know you don't want to be peaking now, but our guys should be winning the close matches and beating the guys they are supposed to. Jon Reader has been surprising and not in a good way. What are all of your opinions?

I feel we are missing something in the coaching/training.....our guys just don't have an 'edge' like Brands troops.

    Re: Cyclone Wrestling

I think we'll be alright, while our guys are not as dominant as some would hope, the majority of them can beat any wrestler on any given day, but also lose to any wrestler. With the majority of them being upperclassmen, I hope their experience shows at nationals. Clark, Fanthorpe, Gallick, Reader, Varner, and Z could win it all, who knows. I wish I could put Sanderson in but he's been disappointing. Who knows about Burk and Ward isn't really there yet......but when it comes to ISU all I ask is that we have a chance, and with wrestling its a good one.

We had Midlands in the bag and blew it, partly because were Iowa State, its time luck turned our way. I still think we'll get 10 to nationals perhaps even without Burk.

We are more likely to have 10 at Nationals than they are. They are struggling at 157 and 197. All of our gusy are in the Top 20. As long as Duke Burke gets back at 174 and Ward is maybe a bubble guy of sorts we will have all 10 at nationals.

    Re: Cyclone Wrestling

Hopefully we will get 10 and Iowa will probably have 9. Then we just need to finish matches, I would like to know what our record against Iowa is in the last 2 years for matches that are decided by 1 point or in OT. It is probably pretty bad.

This is dead on. I will **** a brick if Iowa qualifies more than 8. It's possible though, but we do have a much better chance of getting 9 or 10. ESPECIALLY with the big 12 being a tiny bit down this year(which is, of course, relative).

It's also important to remember that we don't (technically) have to beat iowa. And by that I mean, some of our wrestlers may have some tough head to head matchups against them, particularly in the finals, but it's not like it's a head to head matchup. Which will definitely be in our favor

Get an 'edge' to our wrestling is exactly right. We haven't had one for over 20yrs as a team (a few individuals have).

struggling at 197...did you watch Chad this weekend??...he looks pretty solid. Hes nto going to wint the NC but he'll qualify for nationals and score points for sure....157 is an absolute hole for us...not good at all

    Re: Cyclone Wrestling

What you have to remember is it doesn't matter how many you qualify, but what those guy's do that do qualify.

Iowa State qualified 10 last year, Iowa qualified 9 and didn't even get points from 141 so they only had 8 guys score. The second and third place teams Ohio St and Penn St only qualified 7 each.

It is nice to have numbers but you can win the title with less then a full team and what you get out of qualifiers is more important then taking 10 when 2 or 3 only win one match and lose twice to get eliminated.

Very true. Iowa State finished 2nd in 2002, despite only 7 qualifiers. Had 3 champs (Holker, Heskett, Sanderson), a 6th place (Maldonado) and a 7th place (Roberson).
