    Cancun places to see

I am leaving for a wedding in Cancun in 4 days, I never went there on spring break. I am not really looking for the usual spring break hangouts, just wondering if there are any places I have to see there. We will be there for 4 days and don't want to miss something that might be worthwhile. Of course it will be between the drunkin haze of an all inclusive resort, but any information is welcome. Also figured some people would want to share some moments from their time there!

    Re: Cancun places to see

If you can take time outside of Cancun, check out the archaelogical sites at Chichen Itza (2 hrs inland/ to west, I think) and Tulum (30 mins to the south on the coast).

Of course there is excellent food/ restaurants. I don't think you'll have any trouble avoiding the "spring break scene"... I'm pretty sure it only happens to that extent in March.

Yeah, I know the spring break thing isn't going on, the information you are all giving is great, I havn't done much research, so finding out they have the historical sites pretty close is a welcomed surprise.

I'll second Chichen Itza, very cool. It is a good 2 hours away from Cancun but surely you'd be able to find a tour bus trip or something to take you there. I've been there twice, once in high school about 10 years ago and just a couple years ago for an awards trip at work. I was disappointed to find that they don't let people climb the big pyramid anymore, someone fell and died a few years ago. In retrospect, I should've been more surprised that they let us climb them on the first trip because they are extremely steep. Still a worthwhile trip though.

Tulum is pretty cool. Old Mayan ruins set in jungle settings. But its at least an hour away from Cancun. We stayed at an all-inclusive 30 minutes south, and we had at least another 30 minutes on a bus.

Too bad to hear. They are all pretty steep. A lesser known, but larger ruin site (once all excavated) near the Guatamalan border called "Calakmul" is about 60 degrees on the steps, and almost twice as tall as el capitan at Chichen Itza. I crawled up that one on all fours...

    Re: Cancun places to see

I will third Chichen Itza...I will also say Tulum, Xel Ha, and Xcaret

Chichen Itza is the most walking but the most interesting

Xel Ha is very fun and so is Xcaret

I believe when we went to tulum you could snorkel at the 2nd largest reef in the world and you can touch the bottom of the ocean about 200 yards out, and on the other side of the reef, it is a couple hundred feet deep!

There is a restaurant called Pericos and it is a definate must go I think. They have a midget guy that walks around and they are very good with pulling pranks on the entire group...they also have live band with a little stage that they always have people come up and dance, and they do a little train thing and when you leave the restaurant they pour tequila in everyones mouth!

I've been there 4 times, so know a lot of ins-and-outs so if you have any questions just ask them and ill try to answer them

    Re: Cancun places to see

If you only go to one club- Go to Coco Bongos. It is more like a Las Vegas show/Party. It is about 50 bucks I think, which we originally thought was a little steep for Mexico but it was worth every penny.

Also- Tulum is good if you are into history. My dad and I thought it was cool, the rest of the crew was bored out of their mind.

Head to Tulum, but stop at Akumal and snorkel with the sea turtles and go out to the coral reef.

Don't tell people about Akumal, it doesn't need to get touristy faster than it will anyways.

    Re: Cancun places to see

I was just in Cancun last week.....stayed at Moon Palace. We went deep sea fishing, and my 16 yr old brother caught an 8' long sail fish. Went scuba diving the next day which was really cool. Next day went to a place to go though the jungle on ziplines: Selvatica Zipline Tour Didnt see any ruins as there wasnt any time to and it wouldve taken a whole day on our short trip. Senor Frogs was alright at night, I heard that Coco Bongo was pretty BA.

Good point. I was there for a week...snorkeled for several hours every day and loved it.
