    Ban on Men's Practice Players?

Interesting read from ESPN.com about the NCAA's Committee on Women's Athletics proposing a ban on men's practice players. Seems like a bad idea, and it sounds like others agree. I assume ISU uses men for practice...

Yes they do I have a friend who practices with them. Fennelly has some rules like you can't date any of the players and what not but they are basically the scout team in practice.

Sometimes I really wonder if the NCAA is living in the 21st century.

Are butt slaps and chest bumps ok?

What better way to show 'good game' than a classic butt slap.

Re: Ban on Men's Practice Players?

I knew someone back in college that was on the women's practice squad. For all those who think that the women's game is not physical he had the bruises to prove it's more physical than you think! I can only imagine Desiree Francis throwing a hip into you while going for a rebound.

The women's b-ball team floor was our sister floor one year but Desiree was about the only one of them that would ever come out of their room to do anything with us. The others mostly kept the doors shut and the only time you saw them was when they were walking down the hall. Des was pretty funny though.

I wonder what their deal was? Too good to hang with peons like us or just too busy for monkey-business?

prolly too busy. all that practice time, class time, and study time doesn't leave much time for free time. remember how good their grades are...

Re: Ban on Men's Practice Players?

I practiced with the women's team at ISU back in the late 80s. (Showing my age... LOL)

I remember going into the first practice laughing about how easy it was going to be to school the women. Boy, was I in for a shock. Lynn Lorenzen was a nice gal, but she was one of the toughest dirtiest players, male or female, I ever had to guard!

It was a great experience and it would be a trule STUPID move on the NCAAs part to ban male practice players.

Re: Ban on Men's Practice Players?

I never was on any practice squad, but I played against plenty of women in college, and like was said, you think "uh, ok, I'll guard the chic", the next thing you know you're working your rear off to keep them from getting the ball and scoring. Maybe I'm not good, but my point is, once you're playing you don't really give a rats rear if it's a guy or a gal.

Dir, NCAA. I spit in your general direction.

Re: Ban on Men's Practice Players?

If the NCAA is truly interested in 'gender equality' (which imo, is a misnomer), they will remove the smaller BBall from womens play and use the same size ball as men do.....

But I do love the quote at the bottom of the DSM article...
They're bigger, faster, stronger, and it helps us get better every day."
Said by the wrong man and that quote is hate speech.

I played a girl who was all conference in high school, back in my college days. I think I was about 8" taller than her, and I still was sweating my butt off by the end of the game. Girls can use their hips like no other to block out for a rebound.

Re: Ban on Men's Practice Players?

I used to play pick up games at the rec with some of the girls. Monica Hueleman was who I guarded. She was probably just as good or better than 90% of the guys I played against in high school.

And, pride, you are right on about the hips. Who needs to jump out of the gym when you've got position like that. Who amongst us here would like to have to try to move OU's Courtney Paris on the blocks?
