    Lawrence Westbrook

I just got done watching Westbrook put away the hawkeyes and i couldn't help but remember how he originally signed with us under WM. I think that when we signed him he averaged over 30 ppg. He is built like a tank and he can really shoot especially at the free throw line. It's too bad we couldn't have found a way to keep his commitment he can really play.

    Heres his line this year

If I remember correctly we could have kept him, but chose not to because his father was nuts.

Yeah, I watched him drain those free throws late. I didn't think much of him last year but he's turned into a nice player up there.

That same year we let P'allen Stinnet get away too, that could have been a great back court.

I may have been wrong, he may have chose to leave, but his father was a "stage dad." Someone help me out here.

You could easily make a Sweet 16 or better team from all the talented players who either left our program or almost came to it over the last decade or so.

One of the reasons we passed on Lawrence was because we were expecting to sign another, much better, Westbrook, until UCLA jumped in with an offer at the last moment.

That's interesting. I don't think I have heard that before. I wonder if he would have been a two year and done player at ISU like he was at UCLA.

If I remember correctly, Westbrook still really wanted to be a Cyclone, but our new coaching staff told him thanks, but no thanks. I was very excited when we hired Mac, but that rubbed me the wrong way.

One of the reasons they passed on him was because his dad was a Phillip Bates dad type of guy. The "my son will start or else" crap might work if he actually is the best player, but can be a royal pain in the rear end if he is number 2 or worse.

I don't remember the particulars, but something happened within a few weeks of us stopping our pursuit of him that made me happy he was no more.

    Re: Lawrence Westbrook

I've watched Westbrook play for the last two years at the U of M. Without going into details, i'd say that ISU is better off today with what we have at the guard position.

Westbrook is undersized, and would get eaten alive in the Big 12. He's an attitude case that probably could only be controlled by a legend like Tubby Smith. He's not nearly as good of an outside shooter as i expected someone who averaged 30+ points in high school to be. And he's not that great of a rebounder.

He's solid, and he'd probably play ahead of Boozer in the rotation, but i can't see him beating out DG, Haluska, Staiger, or Eikmeier.

Are you kiddung me???? He would def play above haluska and eik he has so much more to offer than both of them. He is WAY stronger and more athletic than both. And from what i can see he shoots better than both too. Eik and sean are terribly inconsistent.
